Spare key bollocks

My audi only came with one key - no spare and no plastic key.

Apparently keys are main dealer only - £200 plus vat. Ouch.

No doubt my keys are in a box at a car auction somewhere.

There might be an internet workaround?

When I was looking into duplicate keys (non Audi) I found a place whos name I have conveniently forgot who would send you a blank key to get a copy cut onto at your local cobblers and it comes with a single-use doodah that plugs into the OBD plug to program the new chip to the cars brains.

Was that an MG/Rover? I've seen someone doing a OBD Dongly thing for them to program a new key, it's a one-shot affair though.

Never heard anything about Audi though. Some VAGs were pretty simple - get a new key cut by any old cobbler (not cobblers off here, I don't think he's a cobbler - you need a cobbler) and then put any old immobiliser chip in which someone like Timpsons can also supply by querying the frequency given off by your existing one and matching the type. Then you just teach the car the new code by doing some sort of crazy dance with a key in the ignition, one in the door, turn this that way and that this way and press a few buttons.

OR, get a key cut. Remove chip from old key. Glue chip near ignition barrel. Sorted.

If you're using this method, don't ever break the old chip - it's probably in a glass case. If you break that, go to a dealer and drop your trousers. Take lube.

It was a Freelander. They advertised for other marques too, but I dont remember which.

Thats what I did in the end. Cheap ebay chinese blank key and the old chip glued to the inside of the steering column shroud.
