It isnt that bad rust wise but makes up for it in bodgery, having a proper look tomorrow

OK took carb off, (its a hitachi) cleaned everything twice, adjusted idle screw up a bit, adjusted the lean/rich mixture on the choke a bit richer as per Junkmans info.

There are three slots in the arm that pushes the plunger to squirt fuel into the carb, as i felt the fuel wasnt getting in quick enough i moved the rod further into the middle.so it would activate quicker.

Refitted everything, cut back a perished pipe, put a stray pipe back where i thought it went.

First start was a bit iffy but had to fill float bowl etc, was idling too high so adjusted.

Started to run better but idle was still too high, adjusted screw out and left it for a few hours to cool down.

At 2 degrees C it started, had to hold throttle on for 30 secs, then it went fine no issues, pulled away nice from cold, warmed up and was faultless so hope thats done, need a gasket for carb to manifold and will still service as par for the course.

Next issue is the exhaust manifold, the exhaust port nearest the front of the engine has a snapped stud and its loud as fuck so not sealed right. This will be a PITA as its hidden under the thermostat housing so will have to remove all the gubbins to get to the offending stud. No doubt will have to drill out and helicoil it. FML

Been driving this about the yard and "test" road, running issues almost gone, took carb off cleaned, adjusted and put back on.

Now needs a little bit of persuasion to keep running on start up but after that its fine, got a carb rebuild kit for it but looks daunting!

Nothchy power steering is a fucked belt at full tension so an easy fix.

Started getting the alloys back to how they should be,

Good work on those alloys.

I haven't forgotten about finding the dials, but had no luck yet despite finding the surround trim for them.

Nice colour, nice plate.

I had a '78 2.0 Laurel a few years back, made a lovely straight six noise.

Bit of an update on this, now moted, took for a drive today and nearly ended up with an engine with no oil.

First proper drive,

The culprit,

On the motorway i noticed smoke out the back and luckily was coming to a sliproad so pulled off parked up on the side. Got out and could see a trail of oil all the way back onto the motorway. Ooooohhhh shit. Opened bonnet and started engine, oil pissing out from under the oil filter and i mean PISSING out,

Tried loosening and tighening to no avail, phoned AA and let engine cool down, while waiting thought may as well see what the problem is, took of oil filter and it looks ok, look back at where it came from and see that ^ bloody thing hanging there. Some cunttard had put the new filter on and not took off the old oil seal which must have been stuck there and put on a new filter and the old seal had let go.

Phoned AA say its all fixed so they cancel call out, get half a mile down the road and oil light comes on. Cant phone up saying i need oil but thankfully FOAD  (thanks again) came to the rescue with 2 litres of oil and made it back with no issues, disaster averted.

In other news i got the rev counter working after fitting a new power steering belt, no i have no idea either, must have moved a wire or something.

Also fitted new stereo, turn lights on, only main lights work, no side lights, no rear lights and no dash lights, after having half the dash apart and finding out the green/white wire is the one for the dash lights i notice the same wire connected up to the stereo, remove it, replace fuse and hey presto. Fucking hate not having a manual.

They are such a handsome shape. Glad the oil starvation/chattering death was averted.
