privatewire Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Morning all,My mate has just bought an 08 plate Panda with the 1100 engine. On the test drive, I felt it had a slight hesitation when accelerating up through the gears, but put it down to it having been sat for a while, everything else seemed fine. The day he got it, the eml came on, he took it back to the garage, they couldn't find anything wrong with it, and put the eml off, told him to give it a decent run. Yesterday, it wouldn't rev up past 50mph, and was running rough as arses. It's obviously going back to the garage tomorrow, but I'm curious as to what you lot think it could be? I'm thinking coil pack, but surely the diagnostic tester the garage used would have shown that?
HH-R Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Have a look in the thread on here with the Panda that's getting an engine transplant, I've put a fair bit of info in there about running issues. At a guess I'd say cam or crankshaft sensor/wiring to them but ECUs, wiring, sensors, coil packs aren't unknown for causing issues. Ideally it'll need proper diagnostics with someone looking at the output of the sensors on an oscilloscope. I'd advise swapping it for something else if possible. I had two and they were both hopeless, by far the worst vehicles I've owned, and it's been a motley bunch. The above sounds very familiar! privatewire 1
privatewire Posted February 28, 2016 Author Posted February 28, 2016 Aye, I did have a look at the thread, it makes some scary reading! Its all a bit odd, the garage he bought it from has a good name, and the car is known to them as the previously sold it, and have serviced it in the past, so I reckon it must be down to luck, its in his mind to ask for his money back tomorrow.
HH-R Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 They're not complex cars but it's finding someone who will look at it properly instead of shrugging or replacing bits willy nilly. If they're just using a cheapo code reader then they might struggle, proper diagnostics should sort it out though... good luck!
Kiltox Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Diagnostics definitely the first port of call. I use a knock off Delphi DS150 and it seems to be able to do everything you'd need on a Panda.....: although as said checking sensors properly with a scope is probably also a good idea but it might give you somewhere to start Doesn't sound near as bad as my one thankfully
Kiltox Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Also check the leads and plugs - the ones on mine were in a terrible state and definitely not helping the kippered engine to run but not triggering any misfire codes
privatewire Posted February 28, 2016 Author Posted February 28, 2016 Also check the leads and plugs - the ones on mine were in a terrible state and definitely not helping the kippered engine to run but not triggering any misfire codesThat's interesting, as there were no codes showing up when they ran the diagnostics.
LabRat Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 I'd suggest starting with plugs/leads and coil packs. The wife's old 04 plate used to act up like that when one of the coil packs was breaking down, even to lighting the eml with no code. Italian electrics, nice to see they don't change much! HH-R Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 They're surprisingly reluctant to light the EML, even with violent misfiring and a max speed of about 20 odd MPH mine reported as all systems normal.
privatewire Posted February 28, 2016 Author Posted February 28, 2016 Problem could be fuel pump? That makes sense to me as well, we'll see what tomorrow brings.
privatewire Posted February 29, 2016 Author Posted February 29, 2016 So, diagnostics now indicate fuel related.
privatewire Posted March 2, 2016 Author Posted March 2, 2016 Panda back in rude health, crack in the body of Number2 spark plug apparently.A nation rejoices etc. Barry Cade, Lacquer Peel, Aston Martin and 2 others 5
