SWMBO's new Freelander, 806 HDI soon for sale

On Friday I paid for a 2002 Freelander TD4, but I haven't picked it up. It failed the MOT on all four tyres and binding rear brake.

I am hoping that the rear brake issue is due to lack of use (it's been parked up for a month). Apparently there is a lever inside the drum which seizes up, so it is just a case of getting the drum off and greasing the lever.

I need to arrange four new tyres and take the drum off on the sellers drive to free things up, and then take it for a retest and take it home.

Issues:-

The clutch pedal on this one is also a bit low, but maybe that is just how they are. There seems to be an inch of travel before it does anything. I kept the clutch pressed for several minutes and it didn't start engaging so I don't think that either cylinder has gone.

On the other hand other people have reported the master cylinders as causing this issue and they appear the be very easy to change, so I might just fit one anyway.

One electric window dead.

Electric sunroof dead.

AC dead.

Tailgate windows doesn't drop down properly when the handle is pulled, but if you push it down it goes back up when closed. It also goes up/down on the console switch okay, so doesn't seem too serious.

The VCU seems a little tight, but there are no funny noises from the transmission. I tried backwards and forwards on full lock left and right several times, also on and off power aggressively in 1st gear going downhill. There were no noises at all.

Engine seems powerful and smoke free.

There is minor ding in one door and a stone chip on the bonnet, but generally the bodywork looks good.

128000 miles.

I need to get this one ready for SWMBO and then her 806HDI will be for sale.

It has a recent MOT, 8 seats, towbar, 240000 miles and many many dents but not rust.  It won't be available for a couple of weeks though.

The tyres aren't worn out.  They are all cracking due to old age, and probably because they are mud n snow tyres used in the summer.

The IRD is the thing that takes drive from the front diff to the prop shaft.  The VCU is the viscous coupling which allows the front axle and rear axle to to turn at different speeds preventing axle windup, which on the FL1 happens if the VCU gets stiff and this then takes out the IRD and sometimes the rear diff.

If you put a Freelander 1 on full lock and it feels like the brakes have come on it means that the VCU has become stiff, which is means that it is putting a strain on the IRD.

On this particular car there are signs of the VCU becoming stiff, but no signs of damage to the IRD.  This is about as good as it gets on a 13 year old 128K Freelander.  The solution is to fit a new VCU or drop the prop before the damage happens, which is exactly what I will do.

Good point, anyway the sidewalls are covered in cracks, and they are Michelins so not some cheap rubbish.

The Pirelli Scopion Winters on my wife's Grand Vitara lasted 5/6k (25/26k) more than the summer Bridgestones (20k) and thats on all year round, I'm on the second set of Pirellis now, so trust me rather than the Internet. Drives no different, brakes steering no worse in hot weather.

400 ish

Which is less than the solid flywheel conversion cost a few years back.

So it's a 110bhp Hdi but without a DMF.

It does look horrendous though.

Let me know when it's up for sale as having loads of small kids, I don't see the point in having something new and shiny to transport them around in seeing as they will just cover the interior in crumbs, muddy shoe prints, crushed crayons and various bodily fluids :-)
