Lankytim Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Hi gang. I've spied a smokey one of these, apparently it has turbo failure, it's Auto and is quite leggy at 218k. Are they any good? Anything to look out for? Are the turbos easily accessible? Should I avoid a leggy example of this model? Do they EAT veg oil? Do they tow like a bastard? OPINIONS/INPUT REQ.
Lacquer Peel Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Are they sure it's the turbo? I've never had a turbo fail on an old diesel. Looking at engine pics, the turbo is reasonably accessible if it's goosed. I've read in the past that the injection pump (same semi-electronic Bosch as used in lots of veg friendly cars including your XM) is in a shitty place where it gets superheated so the electrics can be a problem. The in tank pump isn't up to pulling veg oil through but it can be replaced with a generic 12v pump. I've always wanted to try one but their lack of instant "vegability" puts me off.
spike60 Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 We had a 1994 E34 525 TDS with same engine that we took from 177k to 254k. Flat off boost making hilly lanes a pain, 32-39 mpg and the crank thrusts on our manual were wanked at the end. A lot die of cold start problems caused by pump seals letting air in, pump removal is a bit involved. We now have 2 184 bhp 530d's, that engine is a revelation with much more power and about 10mpg extra plus instant starting.
D Spares & Tyres Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 I had one. It was ok, but the petrol one I has before was slightly better on fuel. Was only getting 25 mpg out of mine around town. A nice car though but I wouldnt waste my time on one with problems
