I keep tropical fish, in me underpants.... Digger pictures! Engine rebuild

Yep, diesel thinned the oil down.

I'll need to check what the thrust washers are like and see if the block has been worn.

Do you have any idea of the condition of the replacement engine you've been offered?

At this stage I might be tempted to go down that route if it's cheap enough.

Before spending money on parts you need to find the cause of the diesel getting into the sump and as previously mentioned check the condition of the oil pump to see if it's been damaged.

It's possible that you've had a leaking injector on one cylinder causing bore wash and then hydraulic lock. That could explain the piston damage and bent rocker in the same cylinder.

Finding the cause of the diesel getting into the sump is key before getting your wallet out as the mechanical damage is just the symptom and not the real fault. A complete used engine may be a cheaper option here if you can get one as even if it's pretty worn it might have enough hours left in it for you to do what you need with the machine.

Best of luck.

Can you hear the used engine you mentioned being started from cold? If it comes in at less than maybe £300 I would go with that.

I'm hoping to speak to the lad with the engine today.

What's the best way to check for a leaking injector? Can they be tested off the engine?

Yes they need to go to a diesel injection place who will test them and then tell you they are faulty and need the pressures set and new nozzles.

My experience- yours may differ.

It hasn't hydrauliced had it to break that lifter? Does the exhaust point straight up with no cover?

My guess would be its leaking diesel from the mainshaft seal on the injection pump - Pretty simple job to replace on those rotary pumps. Check the obvious first though and make sure its not a faulty diaphragm in the lift pump!

I've been to look at a couple of engines.

One with a cav pump like mine and rebuilt relatively recently for £700 and an older one with less known history and the Simms pump for £500.

I'd get to see them both running on the bench for half an hour and oil pressure tested etc.

Or he'll swap my broken Hymac for a the use of his jcb mk3 for as long as I need it. He would have the hassle of getting my old crock off my land and down the road.

I'm thinking of going for the £700 option.

Recently rebuilt known runner for £700 sounds like a good deal all things considered.

DodgeRover makes a very good point about covering the exhaust and not letting water in. Could very well be the cause of the damaged lifter. I was connecting the lifter and the other engine damage as having the same root cause but that's not necessarily the case. As has been rightly pointed out diesel in the sump is normally the lift pump or main pump leaking although neither would cause the lifter issue.

From the pics it looks like the exhaust has a slight angle. Not sure if this is sufficient to keep out Scottish rain!

As per Phil A's post could the ball bearings rattling around the timing case like a bingo machine have caused the timing to jump hence the rocker damage?

Other damage due to diesel in oil/bore wash?

I would be wary of unknown engines unless very cheap as they could have their own issues. Use of the JCB seems like a sensible option but that's not very Autoshite/fun*

Great thread, very interesting. Good luck with the rest of your building work.
