Civic brakes stuck on HALP PLZ

Yo, shiters,

My brother has a 1999 Civic (Rover 400 shape) and the rear brakes are stuck on from not being used for a few days.

Do these have a drum/shoe in disc arrangement? (It has rear discs). The car can't be moved so I think we're going to tackle it ourselves if poss.

Nightmare of a job or not too bad?

Normal disc set up . Crawl underneath and make sure the levers are all the way back on the calipers ( leave it in gear)

My Polo used to do this. A lot.

I got used to dragging the back wheels down the gravel driveway, up to about 10-15mph, and then when I hit the pavement it would hop and skip and free them off. Apart from the one time it didn't, and I drifted across the road with the back wheel locked up and nearly slid it into a phone box. But ignoring that one time, it was 100% successful.

Thought I'd post a wee update, brother_HH-R took it to a garage who said the discs and pads were USP.

We thought the discs looked OK and they're not that old so decided to change the pads ourselves and risk it for what they cost, the pads were low but worn unevenly. Was fairly easy, other than the top and bottom bolts and bleed nipple being stuck fast. The pistons took the strength of Charles Atlas on steroids to wind back in which didn't seem right. Anyway it lasted about a day before the brakes were stuck on again, took it to a garage again and both callipers were knackered so they have been changed and it seems OK now.

We keep looking for a replacement, it's 16 years old now with well over 100k on the clock but it's hard to find an equivalent. It has 126 brake or something, he doesn't want anything lower/slower but finding something newer with a reasonably powerful petrol engine without going OTT and big boot aren't really plentiful, would probably have to be a newer Civic again.

It's been a good car, just with brakes, tyres and exhaust parts needed really. We think the callipers have been dodgy for a while because he's had to replace the pads and discs 3 or 4 times.
