merc w210 ABS fault-all help welcome

Recommended Posts

Posted

The recently acquired w210 e280(1997)

has decided to flag up an abs warning for 'the Button'

from looking online it could be:

a low battery (swapped it out with another, fault still present)

fuses (all checked and ok)

Brake light switch or

abs speed sensor

Its looking likely that the brake switch is the culprit- anyone got a lead on where to get a good one? Seems some ones can be wonky even when new.

cheers!

If I'm remembering this right, it's not that some new switches are faulty, it's that the wrong ones get fitted.

Correct part number is 001 545 31 09. Bung it in, and clear the code.

INcorrect part is 001 545 21 09, just in case someone tries to fob you off with one.

Intermotor do some Merc switches, maybe worth a look.

I can double check that for you if you want. PM me your chassis number and I'll bung it in the MERCEDESBENZEISATZGRUPPENSONDERBEGLEIT system.

code seems to clear when the car is switched off

I'm just reading that 001 545 31 09 must no longer be used, and that anyone who does so will be tied up with piano wire. It has been superceded by part A 001 545 64 09, but there are in fact three  four fuckin part numbers in total:

So it's one of these 4: (item 70)

Do you know anyone with Carsoft/Starscan? Guessing at the failure will just lead to buying needless stuff.

Nasty "gotcha" my A-class threw at me - the reluctor ring fell off the driveshaft.

Have you joined mercedesclub.org.uk ?

RichardK is right, throwing parts at a problem can be costly and futile. However, in this case, it's very much an instance of "They all do that, sir" and a known fault (with cure), also listed on Autodata.

have you thought about fixing it with fire?

lovely, lovely fire?

i feel sure that this will fix the problem permanently.

You're not near Leicester, are you? Should have asked. You're welcome to pop over and plug it into my Carsoft setup.

nup- but my online searches have throen up threads from there with the likely culprits shown in my post.

I'm sure its nowt problematic, will likely be doing the breaks on it at somepoint for the owner so can hae a swatch then

Alas no-in sunby Glasgowshire, but thanks for the kind offer

I know this will sound weird, but before my friend replaced his with a w126 s class it sprang up an abs fault. The local specialist did something with the joint abs/alarm relay- but unfortunately can't recall what, but it got the abs working at the expense of the alarm.

W210 is CANBus though, I think the W126 is good old analogue all the way through.

Another vote here for brake light switch, my 320 CLK which shares loads of stuff with w210 ate one giving the symptoms you say. There were 2 different switches, 4 and 6 pin or summat, £10 and in stock at local dealer.

I joined MB Club UK when I had had a gearbox issue, several kind folk offered to scan it for free with MB Star system.

Stop guessing ! It could be one of prob a hundred things . Just cos someone on the internet in Albania with an a class fixed it with a brake switch doesn't mean it will be on your car . It needs to be plugged in , codes read and testing / diagnosis to find the fault .

Of course it will be the brake switch now to make me look silly .

Get so fed up at work with the. " Internet says it's ........." Easy fix m8

Codes read, testing and diagnosis are sound advice but not everyone has access to free scanning. My local MB indy wanted £72 to open his scanner 3 years ago. Personally I'd roll the switch dice for a tenner before paying for an expensive scan.

Or remove switch , dig out the multimeter and test it ?

Garages charge big money for diagnostic checks cos the kit costs big money . I worked out that I have spent over 4 grand on diagnostic equip now and I'm only a Fred in the shed type . Still customers moan at a 15 quid reset or 25 quid for a code read and half an hours testing

Scanners are a necessary money pit, either to buy or pay to use. I have been given a 2006 Snap On Solus Pro with all the toys because it's not worth updating, around a grand for an update. Be a long time before I own a 2007 car though. A local we use at work used an £11k Bosch scanner that still couldn't enable the orthopaedic seats on my Merc, it needed a MB Star system.

Bosch kts prob could do it but it's the most frustrating illogical system I've ever used . One chap I know said it's like walking into the biggest library in the country and all the books are in a big heap on the floor . The info is there but you will never find it . Also it's time bombed so if you don't feed it 800 pound updates every 6 months it stops working . At least snap on keep working .

I'll test it next time she's down with it.

As I said, before he replaced his w210 with a W126 the 210 through up an abs fault. The mechanic did a simple, 10 second job involving the alarm relay which deactivated the alarm and got the abs working again.

I have Carsoft. The kits are Dodgy As Fuck (but even officially Carsoft isn't expensive compared to SnapOn/Autel things which are more than just engine code readers). Carsoft 7.4 and a USB or serial multiplexer, will run on most old laptops (want to be flash, chuck a few hundred at a Panasonic Toughbook, but I have an old Windows-XP based touchscreen point of sale terminal - like the ones you see in pubs. Actually, I'm going to get a Toughbook so I can do running diagnostics so will have that up for sale soon. Multiplexers are around £80 but shop around.

BMW Inpa kit is even cheaper, £35 gets the "slightly out of date" setup and it works on 20 pin and OBD-II for full access to CANBus/K etc. systems.

Carsoft is a must-have for anyone with a Mercedes with 722.6 or later gearbox anyway, as it helps a lot with diagnostics and also gives the oil temp readout needed to check levels accurately without having to go under the car with an IR thermometer.

from what i've read above, i am NOW CONVINCED THAT FIRE AND MATCHES/PETROL BOMB  interface is what is needed to fix this.

lovely, lovely fire......

My mobile specialist has the merc diagnostic software, but he's in Bracknell which probably isn't much help for you.

Nae specialists shall be called for a motor that cost a weeks wages:)

it starts, drives and stops, so can continue until it properly misbehaves.

if I can get some friendly person locally to give it a scan when it returns from the frozen north I will!

cheers for all the help :)

Well good luck- Dan is a very cheap speciaist by the way. He charged me £30 for replacing the front brake hoses and changing the fluid on my X1/9 ( which included the hour and a half diagnosing the problem with the hoses and not the calipers in the first place).
