Should have a manual pump,

I'm using my scimitar daily again, I bloody love drifting it and screeching the tyres everywhere,I've been stuck in fat heavy range rovers too long

Yeah this has been converted-there might even be a receipt for it somewhere in the pile it came with. Will see if I can get this setup working-it seems a popular mod on these.

Took it a good blast at the weekend-I need to get some decent tyres on it but it is good fun. Not super quick but it sounds glorious.

Well, I decided it was time to get to the bottom of the fuelling issue. I still suspect fuel pump so have stripped it, resoldered some dry joints and stuck it back together with new connectors. Still not cured it.

It'll start and run fine but every now and then it'll lose all power for a few seconds-it does it every time you floor it which meant running it at Crail alst week would've been pointlesss :(

I decided, before ditching the existing fuel pump for a Facet with a regulator, to try rebuilding the carb. A kit was ordered and duly arrived.

Quick and easy? We shall see...

Carburettor removed. This plate, which is something to do with the breather, will play a part later. Note the two screws holding it in...

The removal and rebuild proved fairly straight forward-I'm supposed to have bits left over, right? A quick word here for www.fastroadcars.co.uk -I ordered the rebuild kit through them and when I stripped it down it turned out the power valve diaphragm was past it's best- a phone call to them on Friday morning had one pop through the letterbox on Saturday morning. Top bloke.

Inside the carb was fairly dirty, the float height was wrong and there was a couple of o rings missing so it was definitely a worthwhile job. Whether it cures things or not remains to be seen tho because...

Remember that plastic plate on the inlet manifold? Before refitting the carb I went to remove it to replace the gasket only for one of the little screws to jump out and disappear into the manifold.

FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!

A magnetic pickup tool proved fruitless so the manifold had to come off, and let's hope it hadn't gone through an open valve into a cylinder...

Thankfully someone previously had left all of the rocker cover gasket bolts loose (the rockers have to come off to get the inlet manifold off , as I now know...) as well as some of the inlet gasket bolts. How thoughtful. Shame they did the same with that little screw...

In remarkably little time this was acheived, with the old inlet manifold helpfully falling apart and into every nook and cranny. A job for the morning...

Followed by finding this little chaps new hiding place.

Gotcha!

The threads are stripped on the plastic block so the other one will be geting flung to fuck, possibly along with the whole thing to be replaced by an external breather.

Not quite what I had planed for the Scim this afternoon but could've been worse...

New manifold gasket required, might as well clean up the manifold and rockers while it's off I suppose too. Can I be arsed to do the valve clearances? Or should I just pull the heads off as the waterways look a bit ropey, although the cooling system was finally working spot on so I might just leave it.

Chances of running at Crail next week? Hmmmmm

Your pictures remind me.. Have you heard of "Gauze" on the scimitars?

Look on the scimmie forum there's patterns for making gauze to go in the throat plate

Good effort chap!

reckon it'll be running spot on once thats done:)

Not updated this for a while-the weather being shit means I've struggled for any time to do anything with it :(

I got it back together and running, albeit not very well. Initial thoughts were that I'd made and arse of the carb rebuild. It also still conked out when given a bootful too so the original problem hadn't been cured.

I bit the bullet and ordered up a Webcon electric fuel pump and installed it a couple of weeks ago. It started(eventually-more on that later) and ran fine(although still a bit rough), however I was running out of daylight to check all of the fittings(new lines and cable wired right to the pump from the relay under the bonnet, including a direct earth) so couldn't test drive it

Today, seeing as i live in Fife and am therefore stranded from civilization (Forth road bridge AND the road to Kincardine both closed today) I decided to crack on.

Lines and cabling all secured first of all.

I then decided to remove the carb-I had a feeling that it had an air leak causing the poor cold starting and rough running. Sure enough, the manifold to carb gaskets that came with the kit weren't very good so it was drawing air through them. i also renewed the engine breather pipes at the same time. Result? It fired right up and ran better than it ever had :)

A test drive confirmed that the engine now runs properly, with a wee pit of hesitation on light throttle openings so I'll give it a tweak at some point. However the random cutting out appears to have gone. The fuel pump that had been installed wasn't rated as powerful enough for the Essex-looks like it had been running out of puff when I'd been hooning.

Enough chat, have some pics...

I may be tempted to part with this in the near future-I have the chance to buy one of my absolute dream cars which I can't pass up, however I don't have the space for this too :(

MOT til September 2016

4 new tires on a nice set of genuine Wolfrace Slotmags

New fuel pump

New dizzy cap and leads

Carb rebuilt

All fuel lines and a load of the coolant lines replaced

New rad cap and thermostat

Stainless fuel tank

Stainless expansion bottle

Gas shocks

Polybushes

Stainles brake hoses

Recent pads and discs on the front

Chassis solid and unpainted so you can see it is metal...

Webasto doesn't seem leaky, although it lives under a carport.

Drives very well, nice and tight and sounds fab! Overdrive works too.

Downsides:

Interior fan stopped working-you do get hot air in but it only goes to your feet though  :(

Bodywork not great-the pics flatter it.

Chassis solid and unpainted so you can see it is metal...

Gearbox oil leak.

If any shiters are interested let me know. it'll be going up on CarandClassic for £1500, there is of course shiters discount available.

Well. Something happened tonight that doesn't happen very often.

I had this up on carandclassic. A chap asked to come and see it, I picked him up from the train station, he looked it over. Numbers were discussed and a suitable one was reached. It burbled away. I am now slightly sad.

If an Opel Manta doesn't turn up soon I'll be really sad :(
