Nürburgring 24h - Sorry, no Rovers...

Shiters might be delighted that the traditional Opel Manta is being raced again this year and in shite terms complemented by a sole Volvo V40 D5,

which is surprisingly not entered by the SVM racing division and pretty much trailing the field.

Leading its class too, at the moment - Kissling Motorsport Manta B (Although apparently it's fitted with a VXR Astra engine).

I watched several hours of this yesterday and suspect I'll watch several more hours later.

I went 2009/10 and it is a fabulous event, pretty hardcore, partly for the racing but mainly for camping out in the Eiffel mountains in spring! 1st year 25c during the day, 5c at night, 2nd year 5c all the time.... Organised, clean, good food, toilets you can and will use, lack of dickhead Brits it's fuck all like the Le Mans 24H.

German plod have strange priorities, if you park with a tyre touching a white line in the middle of nowhere you get towed away, yet we passed the above Manta on the public road during the race, -which it went on to rejoin!  One of works Audi R8 came out of the track by where we were, had a driveshaft changed on the road  and also returned.

Fabulous event, it's a shame that Le Mans gets the weather usually. the N24 has it's date dictated by the music festival which has first dibs on dates so it seems.

I see the Nurburgring has 3 250Km/h limited zones for this weekends 24H race. Speed limits on race tracks? In a country with some unlimited public roads?

They had to be seen to be doing something to cut the GT3 laptimes, after a spectator was killed at a VLN race the other month.

I saw a young Brit driver with Nissan got airborne, shades of Merc at Le Mans 99. A lot of the 'rings appeal to the spectators is the old fashioned proximity to race cars on the limit, when the spectacle is reduced the spectators will be reduced too. Almost none of the 220,000 spectators went to the nice safe GP section when I was there, all were up against the fence on the Nordschleife.

Speed limited, but apparently still faster than last year. That's impressive. This thing has taken over my weekend entirely. Even though sod all is happening at the moment, and the live streaming is showing no action at all.

I went in 2001 with a BMW team and it was pretty full on. I stayed awake until 4am and fucked off to bed, a caravan moored up in the pits. The 911's braking hard for the bastard sharp right hander after the pit straight, discs glowing orange in the dark. Epic.

Sadly, the Ring was substantially ruined in the late 2000's by turning the lovely big grassy car parks into a horrific theme park/pub disaster area. And then charging a disgraceful fee for a Touristfahrt lap. I did 100 laps back in the day and thankfully did most before it became a terrible Brit infested wankerfest. My first was in a rented Opel Astra 1.4 in 1999, thanks Sixt. It was late on a Sunday during the OGP and it was a stunning hot day so paid 4 quid and buzzed it around in 10 or 11 minutes.

Anybody found a live timing site? It makes it so much easier to follow the race.

anything with an Opel badge seems to be having a bad time at the moment.

Saw the Calibra still going a while back. The most amusing thing has been the only Ferrari catching fire, and managing to set a fire extinguisher on fire. No problems - fire put out, went back into the race.

Ha! Invacar just got a mention on the footage. Race red flagged though. Sad times.

Saw one of the Calibras come out the pit for the re-grid, plus an early 90s 3-Series. Can’t actually see a lot because of the fog!

Yeah, some Brits were competing in an E36 coupe before it got binned. I think that's what makes it interesting, the sheer mix of stuff involved.
