Abso-bloody-lutely astonishing!!! How fantastic is thit that such places actually do still exist in the 21st century? They could open them to the public and charge a fiver each to look round- I'd be there!

I went to Dai Goodham's yard (think that was the name) in the 80s to look at the hordes of old steamers that were left there. My photos are on slide so can't post them :( The word at the time was that this lot were so far gone they could not be saved. Now they are all bought and removed and the mantra has become anything is saveable! So I suspect that with time, skill and funds those NCB locos could roll again. Theoretically at least :)

The engines were scrapped by the coal board in 1971 when they ripped up most of the lines around east fife.I remember them sitting in a scrapyard in Thornton in the 80's when i was growing up along with some spectacularly rare cars and other tat. Basically the doors of the yard were almost permanently shut and everything was just left to fester for years. I'm sure there were a fair few more engines when I got a rare chance for a look round many moons ago.It was finally cleared at some point around the mid nineties to be turned into an opencast mine and the engines were moved to Muir's yard in Kirkcaldy where they have been since.. i assume the thornton yard is where the other vintage tat came from as well. Muir's is a fully operating yard / weighbridge though so i wonder how long it will all last there.
