Must have the following..............high driving position and auto [due to dodgy knee] for easy access and driving. not too mahoosive, and 4 wheel drive .Aircon would be a bonus..............Looking at 3 door Freelanders [yes, I know....] Budget, about £2.5 k

Amen, HR-V is very underrated and a damn sight more reliable than anything with a green oval on it.

If you don't want something from The Firm what about a Subaru Impreza 2.0? I would have thought the standard NA lump would come with a slushbox coupled to Subaru permanent four wheel drive.

Seating position on non 4x4 stuff is too low for comfortable boarding due to knee issues....Suggested HRV, she wasn't keen on the looks [don't ask].........Was considering Freelander with 1.8 kettle, as it'll be cheapish, and I'd probably have enough in the kitty to sort out HG issues, and get cam belt / water pump etc done at the same time.

My mrs has a Freelander td4. It has quite surprisingly been a reliable old bus. The starter solenoid played up once but it was an easy and cheap fix. Apart from that just tyres and a back box.

Not the most engaging thing to drive and the interior is acres of plastic but she likes it and that's all that matters.

I wouldn't touch a Freelander with someone else's.
