What's the best shite car you've been given for free?

I was given an excellent condition Alfa 164 24v a few years ago. Must see if I can find a photo.

How about the best free car you were offered but didn't/couldn't take?

I was offered a Jensen Interceptor for $1,000 and a free XJ40 as a package.  But the woman that lives in my house and tells people she's married to me said "no."  Some hitherto unknown rule about the amount of cars a man can own at any one time was cited as the reason.

The owner then sold it to some fucker that parted it out.

My feeble protestations that I could sell the bumpers for more than the purchase price fell on deaf ears - she claimed I was lying and would never sell it... which is a fair comment I suppose as I was lying.  But fuck me - a Jensen for that money, and a free shitty Jag - WTF?  Just coz you've got one doesn't mean you have to behave like a cunt does it?

I also gave my mate a 2200TC P6 before I left the shores of that green and pleasant land.  Last I heard he scrapped it - ungrateful bastard.

I could so very easily have been near the top of the leaderboard of this thread, but for the weather.

I'll explain.

At the age of 16 I was talking to a mate of my granddad's about cars, when he mentioned he had a Triumph Dolomite I could have for free, to learn to drive in. It was in a tin sheet garage he had, and he'd parked it up because the clutch was clearly on its way out. Not quite gone, but it didn't have long, he reckoned. This was a chap of wealth and taste, who had replaced said Dolly with a dark blue Rover 213 Vanden Plas.

He even offered to help me change the clutch, to get it going again. Although not a mechanic, he did look after his cars, and this one was frequently given a splash of fuel and run around the garage site for a bit to keep it more-or-less roadworthy. Any easy-ish fix, no doubt.

I sat in it a couple of times and it all seemed pretty tidy for what was, at the time, just a mildly interesting old banger.

It was one of the last of the line (V reg, I think), with what looked like spitfire steel wheels with black plastic centre caps. T'was black, and supposedly rare. I've seen an SE at a car show, and I think it might have been one of those.

Sadly, the garage fell in on it during a gale, and crushed the poor wee thing beyond repair.

Bugger!, as Unlucky Alf is wont to say.

So I ended up with a Volvo 460 as my first car instead. Though I had to pay for that.

I don't have it now, but wish I did.
