For anyone whose 205 blower motor is dead

It seems to be a common problem so I thought I'd leave this here in case it happens to someone else:

The blower motor had carked it on the 205 I just got from Cavcraft... the previous owner had told him that it was probably the fuse, but it's never that simple, is it?

The first problem was easy, the knob was broken and not operating the control at all. I swapped it for one of the others and a feeble draught was emitted, not enough to part my hair (I don't have much hair).

Stuck 12V across the fan and it went like the clappers, so no bother there. Following the wires from the fan I found a box, containing some sort of magical speed regulator device. This was chock full of leaves and other shit, and consisted mainly of a big transistor with a spring contact on the back. There's a little metal disc between the spring and the transistor, which was corroded to buggery so I took it out and replaced it with a little piece of copper cut from a computer heatsink shim thingy, which did the trick.  Broken knob bodged with Superglue - WIN.

Total cost of repair = no pounds and no pence 8)

SAAB 9k 'Varistor' fan blower controller 'borked'.  It is a plug in/pull out widget on top of the in air duct.

Fiat Sciento [* other models likely] has the same design widgitt directly staring at you, under the bonnet.

Pull out - solder 1 for 1 SAAB to FIAT terminal spades (Fiat are smaller) and bit of Araldite .... off U go.

Just sayinn, like....
