Battery problem?

Recommended Posts

I was trying to fix a bad connection on the lights of my Astra Coupe. I thought whilst doing this that I'd charge the battery as its not moved since November. The lights started working properly but that blew the fuse on the charger. Now I cant even jump start the car, its almost completely dead. I just get a clunk from the engine, won't even turn. Battery goosed?

Could you have put the terminals on the wrong way round? Given that you're an Autoshiter, probably not! If the battery is totally flat it presents an almost dead short to the charger and with the lights on was too much for the charging circuit and the fuse popped. If your charger has a trickle charge option I'd suggest you use it to start with. If not, remove the battery from the car (or remove one of the leads from the battery) before charging it. In this way the charger's only charging the battery & not powering other circuits in the car.

Ah I see why the fuse went now!

I'll take the battery out of my Corsa tomorrow and try it in the Astra. That way I'll know if the car or the battery is dead, will work from there.
