Rover V8 timing help please guys.

Hi folks,

I stuffed the dizzy in again after finding TDC and  she fired up no probs. I've advanced the timing a bit to about 6° with the advance pipe pulled off.

I'm still getting a bit of a tinkering sound. Is there anything I may have missed out?

What compression is it?

Is the dizzy in rude health? No scatter? ( when the marks jump all over the place - wear in the dizzy / advance mech).

Did you make sure the pin of the contact is properly engaged into everything it's supposed to?

How did you determine the 6°?

Also, with Rover V8s, it's more the dwell that counts, than the ° BTDC.

9.4:1 compression. I think the dizzy is okay and I gave it a blob of oil on the shaft and a squirt at the bottom after cleaning to make sure the weights were moving okay.

Have you set the dwell correctly, it'll be a pig to time up if the dwell is out.

I think I better check the dwell again. I'm sure it's not wander from the cam or anything or the ends. COuld it be valve or piston slap? Doesn't really sound like it, though. I'll report back after I shove my brass feelers in the gap.

Silly things first, as you've had the dizzy out, have you all the plug leads in properly?

Well, I usually adjust by ear but I'm just going to double check the dwell after I've played ball with the dog and we'll go from there. Leads were double checked.

I thought you had an SD1?

Surely these are all electronic ignition and dwell not applicable?

As someone else said are quite sure you got the plug leads on correctly? Obviously if running ok apart from noise it ain't gonna be this.

This tinkering.........when does it occur.? If at idle check for something loose.....like heatshields, silencer baffles.

Exhaust leak at manifold (to head) can also sound metallic sometimes

Sorry, it's just force of habit. I still call air gap - dwell, even though its EFI.

Anyway, I didn't have much time today, but it sounds like exhaust tinkling as the engine pinking has mostly gone away now.
