Brining a car home from france

Ive had an idea floating about in my head to go over to france, buy a 305 (hopefully rust free) and bring it home on the ferry. And consider a rhd conversion.

My 305s were bought in further apart places, the first in manchester, the

second in the IOW, france is the next step, using leboincoiny

Is it easy to buy a car in france, what are the particulars to consider, what is their equivilent of tax and mot, is it easy to get insurance for the car being driven in europe.

I found the paperwork side easy enough. A French mot is the CT the log book the carte gris. I think without the CG it would be harder to register it here. I couldn't get insurance with a UK insurer to drive a foreign registered car over there. The seller sorted some out his end.

I personally wouldn't bother with a RHD conversion unless maybe you have all the parts as I found driving a LHD car here a doddle.

As above, once I mastered not driving in the middle of the road (!) I found driving a LHD classic in the UK quite easy to adapt to, no doubt aided by the blindspot-free narrow pillars and small dimensions of older cars. Overtaking parked buses is the only bother, so I wouldn't go through the hassle of a RHD conversion. The seller I bought the Renault off put me on his insurance for the drive home, which helped massively and saved some money. I think others here have had sellers do the same. Make sure you get the CG, bung it off to the DVLA with a fresh UK MOT Cert and a V55 form and Bob's your uncle.

Yes I did find at first I was in the middle of the road, gave my passengers a few scares. I had the added problem that I never had a useable RH mirror!

It doesn't take too long to get used to it.

The other inconvenience were car park barriers! I could just lean across if I got close enough!

I like left hand drive cars over here. For one thing, you step out right onto the pavement, non of that tedious opening your door into traffic and taking your life in your hands as you try to get to the pavement. Added bonus is: if you see someone you don't like walking down the pavement, wait until they get close enough then open the door right into their legs!

Sorry, I didn't see you! :)

I've only ever had one lhd car (that I can recall) and after the first few days, I actually found it easier to drive round here. Roads are narrow and no bugger knows the width of their car so being able to judge where the edge/hedge is, is a positive Godsend.

you can get insurance from these guy's

for a Tagora it was about 60€ for 3 days. expensive. Its better when the seller agrees to  get you on his insurance for a few days, ususally doesn't cost him anything.
