VWPowered Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 As we are an international lot can anyone help, decided that if the family is to stay here in france, then i'll have to go to the work, have done my cv, joined (www.jobs.cz very good site with over 29,000 employers or so they say covering alot of europe) and emailed endless companys regarding work from italy, ireland, czech rep and slovakia (but not the uk..) anyone know of any others i can approach, will drive anywhere in the EU, not scared of going to where the work is..(it isnt going to come to me now is it) any thoughts greatly received please... and before anyone slates me i do understand its hard where you are too, but im just doing what i thinks best and to follow the work trail rather than pray that something comes along.. (if your an employer will gladly email CV (PM for details)
pogweasel Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Firstly, many agencies can be job- or sector-specific. If we know what you do, then maybe we can help better. Also, if you are GOOD at whatever you do, you should know who the big hitters are. Don't ever be afraid to call up 'on-spec'.... agencies take a huge cut for placing you (typically 1/3rd your 1st year salary), so go straight to the folk you want to see and you know might be hiring, and you are in good stead. It shows initiative and saved them a fair few quid. Win situation from day 1. POG
Mr Lobster Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Echo what Pog says really in that if you have skills in a specific sector or want work in a specific industry then go direct to the agencies dealing with that sector as they tend to get the best vacancies and get them first.Otherwise if you are not too specific about what you do, then just hit as many as possible.Good luck!
Ross_K Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Hard to say without knowing what kind of work you're looking for... Here's a couple of general ones: http://www.monster.fr/ http://www.manpower.fr/emplois/

pogweasel Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Hmm. Well from my experience, most employers couldn't give two shits about your family or whatnot at this stage. Plus trying to cover that many bases is not really going to work. Make a batch of CV's up, covering (a) motor trade skills ( construction stuff © this composites thing and see how you get on. Having all those different thing shrieks lack of commitment. Of course if you hadn't skipped off to france (and ergo not paid up on your tax & NI contributions), coming back to the UK would be the best option, but I guess you are damned if you do and damned if you don't now. Is the czech thing really the best option too? If you know how to pour concrete, get straight out to Dubai, make a killing & get a tan.
VWPowered Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 have applied for afew jobs there, my CV only has that i have done construction,; but is focused on my work in the motor trade...will PM you the link..
AXrescuer Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Not trying to be anal but I'd polish up your spelling and grammar before you send anything off. I know you're not applying to companies in the UK as such but you'd be surprised how many foreign employers like to look for such mistakes. I worked for a company based in Greece for 5 years and although I obviously got the job, the picky bastard interviewing me picked up on two minor grammatical errors in my application! Wouldn't mind but English was his 2nd language!
VWPowered Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 monster provided a spell checker, but yes agree my native english is not as good as it should be..now onto manpower...hopefully may do better there as i like driving..
VWPowered Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 ok done manpower, DHL, FedEx etc btw those who maybe looking for work enjoy driving there are afew job on DHL's site for drivers i have no inspiration in returning so i will not be applying for these so feel free
pompei Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Hey, good luck VWP ...I was out of work for three months last year. Targeted the agencies, wrote to dozens of companies direct and in many cases didn't even get an acknowledgement That really is demoralising, but from talking to others, it unfortunately seems to be the norm.Eventually Beloved saw an advert tucked away on page 9645 of a search page, I got in touch and got the job. That was a massive stroke of good luck, but you only need one ...Hope things work out for you.
VWPowered Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 yeah not as bad this year as it was last year, as this year ive only really been potterying about, got laid off a week before christmas last year, which really hit us hard, didnt have anything saved etc, i've had a good year on 3 and 4 day weeks but would prefer something abir more stable... would be nice like...
whitevanman Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 VWP, I'm in a similiar boat to yourself, though UK based, my normal shopfitting work has vanished thanks to this "Crunch" So I've had to travel down to London to get some work (689 mile round trip) but at least it was something, there are a few companies looking for Drivers, but you need to be UK based (I think) and able to work away for up to 3 months, I'll dig out their details if its any use to youDUNC
VWPowered Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 would that be europeon driving... that i can do, can get a english address (although its proberly only for tax purposes), have a uk bank account.. etc etcapplied for more today anyworkanywhere.com, now starting to make myself sick so going to sleep...ZZZZzzzz but good to see that despite your situation you still got yourself down there and working full marks...
Father Ted Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Echos what Pog said really - industry, job specific CV, keep personal details to a minimum, and put towards the end of a CV (ie, my hobbies are x, y and z). Be canny, if you know an employer has an interest in something, tell them you do too ( I swung a job once because the manager was seriously into his land rovers, so I bigged up my interest in old cars and off roading - never sat in a landy before that point!I re write my personal spec every time I apply for a new job within the NHS, just applied for alcohol detox specialist, so application reflected this and played down drug treatment specialist experience, last one for the HSE bigged up communicable disease experience - got interview, was appointable, lost it on experience - you cant win them all, but you can at least get an interview which is a foot in the door and gets your face known. My English grammar and spelling is shite too, so I end to use Word to compose stuff in then copy & paste. Oh yes, if going for an application, read the personal spec and make sure you tell them you can do it. The number of application forms I have binned because they missed an essential criteria - despite otherwise sounding ideal ( you really dont want to be interviewing 49 people for one Band 3 post.)Anyway - good luck.
Barry Cade Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Have you tried Speedy and Pitstop? -Both Kwik-Fit owned and have online applications and jobs avaliable. Kwik-Fit Netherlands and Poland too. They also have mobile tyre fitters out in vans all day.Bit of driving involved too!
VWPowered Posted December 14, 2008 Author Posted December 14, 2008 was thinking that as i've already registered on the KF UK website really dont know if i want to stay in france so may try the other connections Echos what Pog said really - industry, job specific CV, keep personal details to a minimum, and put towards the end of a CV (ie, my hobbies are x, y and z).
