Redline auto parts cheese

Today I went to our local auto parts supplier. came out feeling almost bumraped,

The BX has been reluctant to start at some odd times, It was "looked at" by the AA the other day and they found that the electricity was getting as far as the distributor end of the king lead  but no further. The sensible thing is to replace the Distributor cap and rotor. Said spares place wanted $90 for a cap and $70 for a rotor. Thats 80 pounds to you. They still have them !

On to the outernet and found what I want at Redline Auto Parts in Cheddar at 15.80 pounds for the cap and 2.55 for the rotor. I can afford those even with delivery costs!

Has anyone any knowledge of them ? before I send money. Ads were on ebay.

I haven't used them but found them rather unhelpful as I live nearby and wanted to collect some parts from them. They wouldn't do collection so I suspect they just order stuff from elsewhere and have it shipped direct. Is it not worth trying main dealer as French ignition parts car be a nightmare to get the correct ones.

Bad experiences with Redline I'm afraid.

Wrong componento twice, rubbish parts once, non arrival twice, and an enormous bust up numerous times.

I'm on their blocked list now (although the kids aren't), but I'd buy anywhere rlse, first.

Can you put a link up to the correct parts? I have a spare (new) cap but it may be from a TU engine.

I got a starter for the straight 6 coupe last year from redline. it's a standard Lucas 5" so pretty common. It was a rebuilt unit but seems like good quality for £38 posted.

I tried ordering two strut tops for the Y10 from Redline on ebay.  Bought them on buy it now and then shortly after got the money refunded with an email saying they were out of stock.   The ebay listing stayed put however.

Thanks for the replies,

panhard.. it would be a bit of a mission for me to collect so it matters not how it gets here if the price is right and they can be trusted. Good idea to try a main dealer, the BX has been serviced at the same main dealer since new so they will surely know the correct parts after 25 years ! Price may well be an issue though as it is "European" and therefore like RR spares at retail.

nigel..thanks for the heads up.

Mat the cat..It's 1:30 am here ! Link is on another computer and I have not checked the correctness yet, Redline have 3 different ones listed so will check later.

coalnotdole..you got what you ordered, happiness.

Skut.. at least you got a refund with no hassles, that is good !

I have a local BX / 2CV man here in town but he was away yesterday so will try him again today too.

If by some complete miracle they are the same as ones on my 205, you can have the spares I bought in November and I'll get my folks to bring out a fresh set when then next come to visit. Surprisingly, I got them from Eurocarpart and they were the right bits, though it helped that I flew to the UK and picked them up in person, with the original parts in my hand for reference. Also assured me that the 205 with no cap and rotor arm would still be sitting in the airport car park 12000 miles away when I returned...

That said, consider getting the parts from someone who may only post to the UK, then getting forwarded to you using https://www.nzpost.co.nz/tools/youshop

Also, users from an NZ French car forum have used http://www.micksgarage.com/ with some success, as they deliver to NZ for only 5.95 Euros.

Probable success today !. Went to see our local Citroen expert and fortunately it decided not to start. He poked and prodded about and decided the Dist cap was probably fairly new (it certainly looked good with no sign of tracking etc) and then came the surprise. I had not realised the dist was electronic. Pointless and with an igniter. He thought he had one but could not find it anywhere, so will get one in a few days when at the  cheaper Citroen parts supplier in Hamilton and see what happens. Symptoms were just like I had on a Toyota years ago which was igniter equipped .

So thanks, it may well be solved.

Jon Thanks for the offer but as above all is probably well. Jafas can't push cars !

FIXED>   I ordered an ignition module and while waiting for it to arrive I had a look at what was in front of me. There is a cable from the ignition module on the firewall to the distributor, which is in two parts joined by a plug. A clean of the contacts in the plug has produced instant starting all the time. At least there is now a spare module in my collection !

That plug can be a bit of a weak point. Any time I have had a non start issue in any of my BX's separating & re joining the connector solves it. I always give them a clean with some electrical cleaner as well, but they always seem to fail at some point. I have never had an ignition module fail on me. Maybe that is because I carry one in the car.

I think it is not a Citroen specific module, but shared across many makes models. Ford Escorts of the same vintage may be one, but which variant I don't know.
