K11 Wiper woes...

Ma's K11 Micra has been having problems with the flick-wipe function for the front windscreen wipers. The wiper just fail half way and stop. Now I've changed the wiper motor which temporarily halted the problem, but it's come back and seems to be getting worse. I'm thinking either the wiper arms are bent or the wiper switch itself needs changing/refurbing.

My Merc has a similar problem, but I know it's down to the switch itself as it works when a little more force is put on the switch.

Anyone come across this problem on the K11 Micra before?

Does it park in the right place on standard wipe? If not then there is normally a cam driven switch somewhere in parallel to the main wiper switch that can get worn and cause trouble.

I think on standard wipe it doesn't park itself. Where would the cam-driven switch normally be situated?

Under the plastic scuttle panel is where all the wiper trickery lurks. There is a nylon cam under there which wears, but is an easy fix. Coomon fault is the loss of drive on one wiper (usually the drivers side) resulting in half a screen being cleared and the other half not.

The scuttle is held in with four (IIRC) screws and you need to prise the wipers off their spindles to access the assy under there.

Much lubricity needs to be applied, but you will likely find some rather tired looking nylon bits.

Is it activated by a timer relay? ie: triggered by the column switch when you hit it and stays 'in' for a couple of seconds to allow for one sweep. If so, check the relay is fully home in it's holder, I had a similar issue many years ago with a Fiesta that did this and it was the relay that needed shoving back in and securing (it was mounted upside down under the dash).

Pretty sure the relay is under the bonnet front passenger side in front of the battery. Subject to all the horrors the winter weather can throw at it ( you do realise Im doing this from a very dim memory) Do you have a H-BOL?

I broke the wipers on the Blingo earlier.  Dave*'s advice for today: always check for ice...

Broke or just stripped the splines? Sometimes they can be revived with PTFE tape if its the plakky slplines on the wiper arm. Its only a temp fix, but enough to see you a few days til you can get to the motor factors

Cheers!  I'll try that in the morning, when I can see.  Swapped the fuse in the dark with not enough hands, but...  ;)

There may* be a replacement solid-state unit available to replace all the tired nylon bits with.  I installed one on my Cadillac and it works great.

FEWER MOVING PARTZ YO.

For lubricity: White lithium grease is advisable, that is if it doesn't freeze in your climate. Come to think of it, it freezes and.or evaporates in our climate. Nevermind...

* it doesn't work quite the same, but at least it works.
