Guest Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 The best one is the bottom one off (cheesy but pretty watchable) 80s film "Ten to Midnight". In that scene, cop Bronson is being ferried about by his partner (a young rookie who does things by the book) and has just received some upsetting news so he says something like "Can't you drive any faster?!" and the funniest thing is he probably can't as it's a Plymouth Reliant K with 80hp, 3 speed auto and presumably loads of smog stuff as it's set in California if I recall. The serial killer they're tracking down has a 70s VW Beetle, shame there's no car chase really, they would be quite evenly matched.
r.welfare Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 The K Car captured the mood of the time no doubt, but would surely be the biggest pile of excrement to drive/own. About 11 years ago I remember seeing one at a bombsite dealer in Reading stickered up for £299, quite tempting only it was missing a rear door window. IIRC the rear windows don't even roll down in them things.I probably wouldn't have an old Yank motor due to the whole Country & Western dressing-up image attached to them, and that most of them are just too big for the country roads where I live. If I had the money then I'd probably have a 94-96 Impala SS, which is apparently quite a competent hot rod despite being stupidly big; a mid-80s Mustang also has a certain style in my (jaundiced) eyes, although again probably a dog to drive.Eastern European stuff also leaves me pretty cold but that's probably residual abuse that I suffered from my mum driving Ladas when I was a kid. JDM stuff is beginning to interest me, but my main love is boggo European stuff from say 1970 through to 1985, for the nostalgia factor.
Guest Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I dunno, probably have a nice gentle ride at least, can't take that away from them. Probably slow and wallowy, but isn't that part of the charm? I'd love to drive to work in some B-grade 80s American thing - Chevrolet Celebrity, Pontiac 6000, Oldsmobile Eighty Eight, etc. I reckon all of them would strike a decent balance between being comfortable, cheap and utterly ludicrous and you could drive round pretending that you're going to get pulled over on World's Wildest Police Videos for DUI or something. Anyone spending £5000 just to do that is mad, but for the £500 max I'd spend it'd be worth it I'm sure. The linedancer image of old US cars is quite an unfortunate thing, but it wouldn't bother me that much, as pretty much everything I drive has some sort of image problem.
mk2_craig Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 The sheer shock of finding out just how shonky an eleven-year old Jeep Grand Cherokee can be after 65k and zero servicing this millennium has kinda put me off Yank cars for life. Unless it's an orange '69 Dodge Charger R/T of course
VWPowered Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokeethe french like these cherokee, seen loads of them mostly 2dr
andrew e Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I had a 175k Voyager that was rock solid - mind you they are Austrian (Graz) built things.
