theorganist Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 I have just been under the Horizon as I plan to take it for an MOT in a couple of week. It looks solid, I think it has been waxoiled. However.....both front wings are in a very poor state, they will need replacing as I think the are 30% filler and 30% rust. However that is an expense for the future, well certainly not 2014. The bottoms of the wings are pretty bad quite a lot of corrosion underneath the black underseal painted on. Can any MOT experts tell me what the implications are I assume the wings are considered to be part of the structure therefore would be considered an MOT failure if there was quite a lot of corrosion there! I have attached some pictures of the area, there appears to be quite a chunk missing from the bottom corner of the offside wing!
r.welfare Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 If they are bolt on I cannot see how they would be considered part of the structure? Perhaps a bit of gaffer tape over the sharp edges will suffice for now.
vulgalour Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 I had holes in the bottom of the wings on the Princess in the same places. I applied silver gaffer tape. It was super effective. I still failed the MoT, but not on the holes in the wings. theorganist, Bren and brickwall 3
theorganist Posted September 28, 2014 Author Posted September 28, 2014 Thanks both I am sure the Renault 14 had issues there and it didn't fail there come to think about it, just everywhere else!
forddeliveryboy Posted September 28, 2014 Posted September 28, 2014 If the arches themselves are good and it's just the lower edge (and above) behind the wheel, there's nothing to stop you from welding or riveting a new section in. Shame to replace a whole wing just for a few square cm of rot near a mudflap. Of course, if it's rotten along all the edges then do the decent thing.
theorganist Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 Well the wings overall are pretty poor, there are various areas of filler and cracks, the rest of the car is decent. I think welding a new section in is certainly a good measure for now. Long term new wings will probably be needed as they are very tatty.
