Hendry Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 A relative has died and we now need to punt their car, just looking for a realistic price we should expect to get for a quick sale, I've looked on autotrader, Gumtree, eBay etc and even seen what they go for retail at dealers to get a rough idea but its all over the place. Situation is the car has been off the road over a year as relative took an epileptic seizure and had licence revoked, then got licence back but died before the car got reconditioned so we will be fully servicing it, 4 new tyres, a full years new MOT, discs and pads, and probably stuff like bushes etc which have perished so it'll probably be mechanically pretty sorted, And I'll be properly valeting it to within an inch of its life. Details are: 2007 "07" plate Renault Clio Mk3 prefacelift 1.2 16v 'Extreme' spec, 3 door hatch, manual. Colour is "Tempest" metallic (dark bluey grey colour).its in pretty good condition, no dents, scratches or major scuffs, its got a very small split at the top edge of the front bumper, a couple of very minor scuffs like its grazed bushes on the way past, it has part service history (serviced by Renault in 2010 and 2011 which is stamped in the book, no entries before this, and the 2 services since in 2012/2013 were done by a mechanic friend of the owner so no stamp in book) mileage is 25,000-ish which is very low for the year, however timing belt kit and water pump are original and won't be getting changed before sale unless mechanic says the belt is perished/worn (ive said they are overdue agewise but been told they arent spending £250 doing something like this to a car they are selling if they can avoid it) 2 former owners including deceased. Spec is remote central locking, electric front windows, CD player, trip computer, 4 airbags, abs, steering column mounted remote audio controls, 15" alloys. Does putting it up for £2800 hoping to get £2400 cash sound overpriced realistically ?
Rocket88 Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 If I was buying it, I'd want the belt changed...................price doesn't seem outrageous
Partridge Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I'd say £2,400 sounds spot on. So spot on in fact, that figure formed in my head before I read your valuation.
lisbon_road Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 People love low miles cars. Not everyone is worried about cambelts. I'd push it a bit higher if you are in no rush. Sadly I don't think it is that easy to inspect the belt on that engine unless someone else knows better. Try cap.co.uk for a valuation, they can be optimistic but I use gumtree and edge the price down until it goes. Loads of demand for a car like this so you won't have to wait too long,
Cavcraft Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 With that mileage I'd bang it up at £2995 and do the cam belt. It's not just peace of mind, but a new owner will be more forthcoming if they know it's been done. The mileage alone should really sell the car to be honest.
Mr Lobster Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Does it really need four new tyres? Similarly bushes? If its only been off the road a year I wouldn't bother unless they are MOT fail items. Worth doing cambelt and water pump though. I agree with Billy on price - advertise it at £2995 - its the perfect car for a young driver and with low miles shouldn't be that hard to sell. Sigmund Fraud 1
Hendry Posted September 23, 2014 Author Posted September 23, 2014 The reason I'd thought £2800 settling for £2400 is the likes of Arnie Clark have some similar ones on their website, higher mileage granted but a retail car hence I thought if I price it too high people will say to themselves "why bother risking a private sale and the car has issues when for not much more I can buy from a dealer and have the peace of mind of a comeback on the dealer if it goes horribly wrong" Another couple of points:1. Its my dad paying for the repairs and hes said he's not doing timing belt unless his mechanic inspects and says its at risk of snapping, we've already argued about it and he won't budge despite me telling him if it goes the cars as well scrapped and spending on that will definitely mean not risking needing an engine rebuild. 2. As the person who's name is currently on the V5 is now dead, I obviously assume we will need to send away to get the v5 back in my dads or my name as would usually happen when a car changes hands but that's going to mean 3 previous keepers (which I know doesn't matter much) but it really won't have, any way around this? 3. The car is currently on sorn, when we transfer ownership to my dads or my name will the car remain on sorn automatically or will we need to reapply for sorn due yo change of keeper, and when we do sell it it will obviously still be on sorn as we're don't plan to use it, when someone buys it, with the new tax system going to be in place by then, how will the new owner drive it away, can they immediately remove the sorn and tax it the day they collect it?
Hendry Posted September 24, 2014 Author Posted September 24, 2014 Any ideas on the tax/sorn/dvla side of things?
Skizzer Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Any ideas on the tax/sorn/dvla side of things? New owner can tax it online or by phone with immediate effectand drive it away legally, much as they can today (though without the paper tax disc from 1 Oct). See various other threads for discussions about when this can be done by direct debit - looks like that starts in November. The V5 just shows who the registered keeper is, not who the legal owner is, so if the car is on SORN anyway I can't see why you'd have to change the registered keeper just to sell it. Phone the DVLA and ask them, though, if you're worried. For what it's worth, I bought my Jaguar from the son of the deceased owner and the V5 was still in his late father's name. It didn't trouble me, though I suppose it might some punters. If you do change registered keeper, though, you should re-declare SORN. Why wouldn't you? It doesn't cost anything.
