MG TF expert advice required.

Before we start, the answer is not 'bridge it' or HGF,thank you.

Mother in law just got back from shopping and the boot won't open on her 03 TF. The key turns but nothing happens, boot lid has 2/3 mm of movement to take pressure off but doesn't feel any different when turning the key.

All the MG anorak forums obviously know how to do it but won't let anybody post 'security sensitive' tips. What with the F and TF being in such demand by steal to order gangs and all.

It looks like someone with skinny arms might be able to reach through from the cabin and open it with a screwdriver , but as the Ma in law and to a lesser extent me have manly muscled forearms that's not happening.

Any (sensible ) ideas?

Put hood down, undo the small bolts that hold the inspection panel in place, obtain the arm from an 8 year old and see how that goes.

Failing that I will ask on said forum using my secret MG handshake. Question asked. I'll get back to you on that one.

Try pressing down on the lid as turning the key.

Thanks Ken, one minor fly in the ointment is that the hood doesn't go down.

She's called the AA now, will update in acouple of hours.

Lock set is about twenty quid - drill? I saw another F on eBay with a bent boot lid, looks like it had been forced - common issue?

Ok, latest esciting* instalment . AA man had arms like an 8 year old, and also had done it before. Seems shopping had knocked bit of wire off the release mechanism, quite common. He said it's normally keys locked in the boot though.

Thanks for suggestions and to Ken for risking asking a question at the Lodge for an outsider!

I locked the key in the boot. I prized the lock out of the boot panel. Quite easy and didn't show any signs of damage.

Glad it is sorted mate. See it wasn't the head gaskets fault after all  :-D
