Renault 18 GTD

It was cold but it's been colder lately and it's started fine.

Fuck knows, I'll try the battery isolation suggestion, but will just disconnect the battery before buying an isolator to see if it does anything.

Eye is fine just has a bit of iodine in it now!

I appear to have sorted this.

I fitted the new alternator, the engine is a bit quieter now that the alternator isn't wailing away.

Whilst I was doing this I noticed one of the long bolts on the starter motor, that hold the two halves together had come loose, so I removed the starter and made sure that bolt was tight.

I also cleaned up the starter flange and bell housing flange as it appears to earth through this.

The starter motor cranks over much much faster now and as such the car starts pretty much as soon as you turn the key.

Back of the net!

Weekly 18 GTD failings - the indicators have stopped working.

I've experienced this before on the GTL, it will be something to do with the fuse board or the relay.

At least I'm hoping so as really don't want to buy another stalk having just replaced them a month or so ago with a used set.

Just buy some bmw/audi badges and position fore and aft.

Voila! N'er an indicator needed again

I like it, but then I would have to tailgate folk and that doesn't happen in a NA diesel Renault 18.

Unless they're old as fuck.

Grapple hook and 10000lb winch ftw

I'm fairly sure you can just bolt the turbo bits onto this engine, they are both j8s engines, but I'm not fussed for it being fast.

It wouldn't because I would drive it faster everywhere.

As I say I'm really not fussed about this being fast, it's a commuter car that spends most of its time on the motorway, I don't tend to speed so it's adequate enough.

Well - easiest French car fix ever.

Just unplugged the flasher unit, plugged it back in, and they work again.

Now that I'm not pissed off with it, here's a superb pic FOAD took.

Timing belt went pop on this recently.

It's coming off the road for some welding and general improvements.

Apparently timing belts snapping on these just means new rocker arms but I'm half tempted by a turbo diesel j8s engine from an Espace.

I also need a new gearbox and I'm told an Espace engine and box will fit, but my NA diesel won't fit the Espace box.

Finding an 18 diesel box has proven very difficult, I haven't found a glimmer of one anywhere for sale.

Hi,
yes, a snapped timing belt usually just means a few rocker arms.

But fitting an Espace engine and gearbox sounds sensible. They used the ng3 gearbox just like the R18 turbo-d so I don't think you'd have problems fitting it.

Why won't your engine fit the turbo gearbox? The non-Turbo has a ng1 instead of an ng3 gearbox but I don't think that matters much. The r21 one has a different clutch and bell housing setup.

I should be working on my Renault 30 td but there are too many other projects :(

I found once on an R18 that holding the flasher switch halfway (so they blink twice as fast), while playing with the indicator stalk, can have the same effect. French electrics.

Great photo.

It's the clutch and bell housing setup that would be the issue, it might be possible to swap them though.

But anyway, a turbo diesel sounds better.

The electrics are horrific in it, all of the bits seem to be made very poorly indeed.
