XJ40 values on the up? (shock, horror)

I agree with that. I particularly like the centre console of the Series 3, and the way the dash 'sits' high in front of you with all the dials set in it, if you see what I mean.

On my car, i like the paint colour and I like the interior colour, but I would never have chosen them both for the same car. They're just too similar! :D

Aye sure, but all the same your car does look fantastic. Envy all round here.

I love. My all time favorite car! It got me into British cars and old stuff in general. My Grandparent's friend had one, I'd get to see it most weekends.

They're one of my favourite cars too, which is just as well since I own one!

I reckon 'shiteists' get a good deal out of life in that the cars we love are realistically attainable, rather than lusting after some modern contraption which we can never have since even leased it's two grand a month. A double bonus for me since I don't see the XJ40 as "Shite" at all, but a misunderstood classic -  even though, deep down, I know that I am alone in that!

My late dad bought one of the earliest XJ40s. The Forty was all the rage back then and I remember it attracted quite a lot off attention - though considerably less than the SD1 Rover my Grandfather bought in '76. That car really stood out. My Grandfather was a conservative man and found the attention the 3500 got wherever it went quite embarrassing. I was six though and LOVED it!!

Photo is from 1988.

£3,250

Does make most else seem poor value for money

Father in law had one of these for a while, epic car with the best carpets ever which is a strange stand out memory for a car with a V12 motor.

When the throttle was floored the car would shift angle like a speedboat getting up on the plane as the soft suspension gently gave way to many bags of torque.

These cars have some of the last subtle and  understated English lines to them - Ford's X300 worked because it was based around a genuine, honest product. I remember Setright raising serious question marks over some of the (X300's) detailing owing nothing to engineering and everything to what the public thought it wanted.

It's ironic that the company is now making cars which everyone wants once more, yet they've thrown the classic good looks into the bin - a major factor in buying a Jaguar, traditionally. Since the newly-rich Chinese can't build sufficient English-looking houses, I'd be surprised if they wouldn't love more distinctive Britishness to Jags.

Not at all-I agree.

Don't really think the word 'classic' is very useful when referring to old cars. They're either good or not, desired or not by individuals. Value is largely meaningless for old cars, as it is for new ones.

I agree with that. The description 'classic' is generally used to exclude cars and the definition is kept deliberately narrow to that end. I tend to use the term to cover anything at all which has survived long enough to trigger nostalgia, which I guess renders the concept meaningless too.

A couple of years ago I visited the Tatton car show at Tatton Park in Knutsford. I noticed a particularly nice XJ6 Series 1 being displayed there, and got talking to a man I presume was the owner.

After a while he asked me if I too had a Jag. I replied that I did - an XJ40. He muttered "Oh dear!" and fled. Clearly, the XJ40 was not regarded as a "classic" by him!!

And yet, I remember when my dad was buying S1 and S2 XJ6s for £100-200 and they weren't classics either! Or DSs when they were the same ...

I bought (and was sometimes given free) bubble cars for less than £50. They were just shite then. They're still shit, but just expensive shit!

I don't really get on with the XJ40 so would never spend good money on one. Love the X300 though.

The same cars, pretty much.

I avoid using the term 'classic' since I think it has connotations of both crap and exclusive all rolled into one nasty idea. I enjoy watching people's faces when I just use the term, 'old'. It's as if nothing can be old in this throwaway society today - people spray up 'classics' to look as if they've come down a 2010 production line in much the same way as middle-aged wealthy sorts have nip and tuck surgery.

I loved my grandparents for their wrinkly skin and silver hair - as soon as you start fiddling with appearances it's almost impossible to get it right, and it definitely won't stay right. We all* seem to want shiny and live for the moment, when in fact life is a rich pageant of slow-moving experiences. Integrity and honesty are as valuable in an old car as they are a person.

It's precisely because of old duffers like him that I want a Mitsuoka Viewt.
