Rust killer?

I need to attend to the front subframe of other halfs fiesta - it has shed all of it's paint and I suspect another winter may see it off.

I have used jenolite in the past to kill rust off but i suspect things have moved on a bit since this came out - has anybody used por - 15 or bilt hamber stuff?

There are two types that I know of, the rust converters/neutralisers/killers which turn the rust into a black substance and the rust removers which will take it back to shiny steel. With the converters there is the danger that while the top layer of the rust may be converted, there could be some remaining underneath. With the rust removers, I've used BH Deox gel which does work, albeit slowly on deep pitting. It seems to turn the rust into a darker, water soluble substance which you then wash off. For this reason it may not work very well when it comes to rust within a seam. Hammerite do a similar remover, can't remember the name but it's green in colour. Seemed to work similarly but more expensive.

I've never yet used a rust converter that works on anything other than very light surface rust. Every time, if you take a wire wheel to it after it's gone black and dried, you'll find active rust underneath still. Rust removers are better, such as Deoc_C that Mr. The_cat mentions. They do require patience though as they work slowly but you can't beat the results.

POR-15 all the time for me; I got fed up of having to re-treat rust every couple of months until I discovered this. It lasts for years.
