What would cause the brakes to seize on on a modern car with ABS

As per the title I was looking at 2003 honda for sale with ~90,000 miles on the clock, in the ad the seller said he has burnt out the clutch trying to drive it with the brakes seized, he then goes on to mention it would be a good car as all you need to do is fit a new clutch and clean the brakes.

I doubt the brakes were seized enough to burn the clutch out just because they need a good clean, so I wondering what else could cause them to stick on and all I could think of was a serious fault with the ABS pump???

Would else could cause the brakes to seize so badly?

Master cylinder borked or something I guess.

Possible seized handbrake shoes/drums or calipers if rear discs fitted, left parked for a long period with handbrake on.

If its Accord or Civic, these are bloody good cars, my daughters on her second Civic 2.0S type of that shape, despite her heroic and determined best efforts she couldn't break either of them.

For modern crap these are one of the best cars made IMHO, neck and neck with Corolla, really nice to work on except, curiously, the oil filter on the 2 litre can be an arse to get at..

Yeah it was Civic, I'm being 'encouraged' by OH and family to sell my Alfa and get something less thirsty and will less chance of exploding into an fireball of that's going to costalota to fix.

This car doesn't sound ideal then!

It could be once I've sorted it :)

If it needs discs and pads it won't be too bad a fix, if it need rear calipers (handbrake cable goes into them, not top hat design with inner shoes) then they might be a bit pricey....it might just be the result of neglect and seized calipers all round, but they must be bloody well seized, stood long?

Clutch 'looks' an easy DIY, famous last words.

^Quite possibly this^. Years ago I bought an R12 where a master cylinder repair kit had been wrongly installed - it caused the brakes to seize after a few applications - then would slowly release over a period of time.
