Two total heroes.

Rauno Aaltonen and Henry Liddon.

And yes, Mr Aaltonen really was an elementary school teacher.

Mr. Liddon had the chutzpah of an East India Sergeant Major, Khyber Pass division.

Yes, but who is the dapper chap to the right? Giacinto himself?

Yes, I wondered that and had a quick look at other similar pix. Didn't see anyone who lresembled him. Perhaps he'd just walked off the Adams Family set.

Guatemalan Enrique Hachmeister lost his life in the inaugural 1950 Carrera Panamericana.

He participated in the race, because race cars were exempt from import duty, and he wanted to import his brand new 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan into his native Guatemala.

Now if that isn't proper stiffer upper lip stuff, then I don't know.

Enter Ak Miller and the Carrera Panamericana 1954.

Miller is a Hot-Rod pioneer and an eccentric - even by the demanding standards set by British intellectuals.

He entered a home-made heap, which he christened "Caballo De Hiero" - the iron horse.

He, and his co-driver Douglas Harrison, didn't win the race, but they gave the assorted elite from Europe and America, the likes of Bill Stroppe Lincolns, Ferraris, Mercedesesses, and Porsches, a bloody well run for their money. Needless to mention, that their laid back attitude proved a hit with the local Senorinas.

When I met Ak in the 90s, he told me that he just returned from a holiday in Mexico and that he visited Mexico City, where an elderly chap walked up to him and greeted him like an old friend. The gent was a track marshall at the '54 Carrera.

And they were proper trams which provided real transport throughout the Capital, not just a there and back line between the centre and airport. What's more, those in the town itself were cable hauled (as in San Francisco) until the mid 20s, some winding gear is still visible in Henderson Row, Stockbridge.

Charles Rolls at the front of a four man tandem - he won University recognition for his cycling speed. It was cyclists campaigns for better raods which paved the way for the motor car's success.

The first bicycle shop in Britain opens. Bicycles are not for sale as no one is yet licenced to ride one. It will be several years before standards are adopted, rules written (cyclists must.gif give at least two days public notice in The Times before circumnavigating a roundabout), and tests given. Meanwhile customers are encouraged to begin examining the stock with a view towards putting in an extra 12 hours a day in the coal mine or wool spinning factory to be able to think about affording one. Accessories include 'Big Ben' brand bells, a drivetrain, and the new improved Carradice saddle bag, now stiffened with modern wood rod instead of whale bone. Women's models are still forbidden, though a few suffragette types will mount what some call "The Devil's stallion" anyway, risking virtue and a spell in gaol. Horse riders unhappy at sharing the thoroughfares begin a grumbling campaign to be taken up by their grandchildren when the motorcar gets around to being invented.
