Wilko220 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Not here, fortunately... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-27583404 Much interesting tat that we would recognise in China, I wonder?
Junkman Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 OMG buy SH760 Now! On a different note: Recent findings from the state's environmental agency showed that 31% of the air pollution in Beijing comes from vehicle exhaust fumes. So 69% of the air pollution remains completely unaddressed, because it doesn't come from cars, and therefore doesn't count. The "more than 300,000 vehicles" - the article doesn't state what proportion of the 31% of polluting cars they constitute - will be replaced with cars emitting how many percent less pollutants than the ones they replace? To recycle the old ones and build the new ones will create which proportion of the 69% unaddressed pollution?Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of a car's emission is CO2 - hardly a pollutant. Verdict: Social engineering at work. michael t, Luckythirteen, eddyramrod and 2 others 5
Bobthebeard Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Hmmmm. As above really.China now manufactures most of everything it seems. The pollution from factories and unregulated manufacturing must be immense. Mostly not cars! However, scrap lots of cars, cause demand for cars to be manufactured and bobs yer uncle. Cars are blamed for everything. We all need them, are scared of being without them, so win win *situation for the government. Verdict. Bollocks! *win win not being a chinese gag in any way. Soz.
forddeliveryboy Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 The longer their own population keeps on buying everything they produce, the longer the European industry has without the headache of £5000 electric cars and the rest. Not sure whether that's a good thing or no?
Junkman Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 If you drive a post-1990 car through Peking, what comes out of the exhaust is cleaner than what is sucked into the air filter. PHAKT.
forddeliveryboy Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Gov'mint only ever measures (and publishes) what it wants you to know about. Loads of nasties in exhaust gas other than what's tested for. Diesel fuel additives among the worst - the fuel itself isn't as bad, though still filthy compared with vegoil or petrol. Platinum, rhodium, palladium not good to inhale either - yet this dust is in signifgicant proportions in urban areas. Bloody catalytic converters.
Angrydicky Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 A shame to hear this, but I don't think there's much tat in Beijing anyway. Hopefully nothing too significant will be destroyed.
MrDuke Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 There were shockingly few pre-80s cars when I was there, and that was nearly 15 years ago. I suspect the majority of what classic cars they do have, will be nice shiny examples owned by rich people anyway.
lisbon_road Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 I lived there in 91-92 for about 18 months. I have pictures of the Liberation lorries, and old cars that were based on a 1950s Merc copy with modified front and rear styling. Took them for granted then - I have just one picture of one of those with the early styling. But from what I hear, such pictures are about all you'll find. No sentiment there.
oman5 Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 complete horseshit. Everything is coal fired and factory emissions completely unregulated. not willing to sacrifice economic growth (read fucking up the environment to get rich) the car is the easiest target, and you also get to stimulate production of new vehicles to replace the old.It will have a negligible effect on air quality.
PhilA Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Yup. San Francisco still has smog from time to time.. but it doesn't come from the city any more. It comes from China, blows over on the jet stream and descends upon the land mass. Go figure. Phil
