Lots of haters but my tuppence worth -

Bought an x reg a4 avant 1.9 tdi 90hp job for £650 last year with 200k on the clock. New cam belt fitted then took the family on a 3000+ mile euro tour. Never missed a beat and 50+ mpg. Drives like new, starts first turn, everything works. Just passed its mot last week with only minor issues and treated it to an oil change.

That's kinda my plan - Semi reliable, 50mpg, and a big boot for hauling tat. Leaves the option to also acquire semi-unreliable, more Autoshite-focused chod, and have a back up parts carrier / broken down chod dragger.

 

The Avensis is looking appealing* - They might just be the most boring car in the world, but half of the mincab drivers in Ireland run 'em, so they must be reliable.
