1.6 L reg Ford Escort - opinions?

Lots of sound advice. General consensus seems to be that they are particularly inoffensive motoring by the sounds of it. I'll let you know updates as and when they come. Also re insurance - classic seems to be a no-go, when I was 17 I got told by everyone to come back when I was 21. Well I am 21 next week, so we shall see what they say then!

By the way - this car hasn't been advertised publicly, I think it's a case of it's for sale if we want it, but if we don't then no harm will come of it. Although if he does want to scrap, then I'll help to find it a new home.

Mo, the Coupe isn't a bad car, I just dislike the autobox in the main. It had a leak and restricts the power - overtaking is a no-go. I'm certain my manual was never that bad. But it is for sale on car and classic ( http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C491091 ) so hopefully it will find a new home. Price is negotiable for someone who wants to keep it on the road, however I will say If it stays with me it may be donating mechanicals for the Si. But it shouldn't come to that. Bloody comfortable, though! Plus I may be taking on my dad's Sterling as it's had a knock and now it's tainted they want rid/want something cheaper. This Escort could well be their replacement! Sounds complicated, I assure you it isn't...I think...

EFA.

I cannot stand these cars, they're proper desperate, like the very last vehicle you'd buy because there was nothing else available at that price, and even then you'd only want one to get you to work so you could save up for something better.

I could say the same about Corsas :-P

You could, but I'd still be several shades corrector.

I knew someone who had an M reg Escort special edition Sapphire from when it was a couple of years old. It had an odd spec with central locking and power steering but windy up windows and no rev counter.

I drove it a few times and thought it was a smooth and fast car, it had the 1.6 Zeta engine, I was comparing it to a Maestro diesel at the time.

The only problems he had from what I remember was the central locking packing up, he had to call the AA to get into the car and a failed alternator.

I wouldn't mind another as a cheap daily to be honest.

Jeesus Partridge, if that red bugger is a 1.4 lean burn it'll need full valve bounce revs and a racing (wait for guffaws to stop) start to move off that track.

That was the same spec as mine, although mine was the "exclusive" edition.

Thank goodness for the wind up windows because the immobiliser would fail to deactivate every couple of days and you had to lean out of the window and lock/unlock the car a few times before it would let you start it.

If you don't keep it, my friend is actually looking for a 1.6 5door escort! He currently has a Fiesta and wants a bigger car.

Negotiations have begun between myself and my dad as to who gets the privilege to own this charming little car and the loser has to slum it in the Sterling.

Looks like I've drawn the short straw and will probably have to make do with the Sterling. Life's a bitch sometimes! ;)

(will be collecting the Escort in a couple of weeks, more updates when they happen).

As an aside, anybody interested in an 820 Coupe for £450 or nearest offer? http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C491091

Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!

My money is on the Oriscort. Bet that plate finds it's way onto something else!

Meh. At first, I thought it was a saloon.
