Another exhaust question

Morning all.

I had a new exhaust back box fitted a couple of weeks ago, and immediately noticed it was much louder than the previous one - drones and sounds quite thrummy.  Took it back and they admitted it was a bit loud, but said it had quite a big silencer on it and would quieten down when it gets a bit of soot in it ("They all do that Sir").

Is this just bollocks?  It's really starting to bug me and if it's just a question of having been sold a cheap one, and upgrading to a better make if possible I'd happily do it. The tailpipe was a different shape to the outgoing one as well.

On a different note have now had my dealer plates from DMB fitted on the car, well chuffed.

I bought an aftermarket final silencer from GSF for me Diesel MB, horrible note which never improved till i sold the car on, narrower exit pipe, stupid me i found out later the genuine article from MB was about a tenner more, you live and learn.

On the other hand my MB indy sourced an Eberspacher rear silencer for me present 6 pot petrol MB, which sounds better than OE, lovely rumble on overrun, thats never altered either but for the good.

You never know till its on what its gunna sound like.

I still like 405's, how come everything modern has to ride on concrete springs to appeal to the sporty clone, you have to go some to keep up with a well driven 405, and still a magic carpet ride to boot on its 70 aspect tyres.

Most aftermarket exhausts have less packing so do sound louder so in a nutshell they all do that sir

That's bollox.

The same happened on my estate and it turned out that the back box is rather close to some underbodywork. It was ever so slightly touching and that made it sound like it has no back box.

It is imperative, that the exhaust on a 405 is meticulously aligned.

I'd call bullshit too.

What they are really saying is fuck off and get used to it mate.......

Another vote for bollocks too. Never known an exhaust sound better with age! Sounds like a poorly fitting pattern part made from thinner steel. But what can you do? Unless you specified that it needed to sound and look the same as the original, it's probably still (in legal terms anyway) fit for purpose.

Aftermarket exhausts usually get louder with age, not quieter, as I have found. I've gone through countless aftermarket systems. The current one on the Corsa has stayed the same for now but the Remus system for my Astra Coupe sounded a bit crap when I first bought it but now makes a nice wuffly sound on overrun (well it did when I last drove it nearly 2 years ago!!)

I'm going to go back there today and have a chat about it, see what they say.
