Fuel can (1/2 full, natch) obligatory in an old Lancia. The gauges on all of mine (over the years) have been so inaccurate that I've run out in all of them!   Doah!

Strangely, the equivalent Fiats of the same era all have excellent dials- and have never caused a problem.

Touch wood!

I usually have a fuel can in every car, along with hi viz, triangle, fire extinguisher, tools, water, oil and tow rope but on this occasion I fouled up on the fuel can front.    I know very well that you must not let cars run low on fuel, but still did it.  i hatez it when I cause a breakdown through my own doofishness.   I still do it.

In email from last owner but one

"Understand pump is forward of fuel tank. Think is Bosch high pressure one -different from the one you sent me picture of and a bit more expensive-£120-£130 seems to come to mind. Fairly sure pump is common to a lot of cars.

Have same pump on Gamma and when the pump stopped it was corrosion in fuse box that supplied live feed to pump rather than pump itself-generally they are very reliable.

Get someone to look at power to pump first."

That's a thought.  Cannot be sure tank was empty, after all (and indeed given miles since last fill was a tad surprised if it was).  Electrics are voodoo to me so will call for help tomorrow.   Fuses all intact, BTW.

Fecking ARSE.   The pump is in a right awkward place, but that is not the worst of it, as it appears there is a wiring problem, and finding that somewhere between the front and the back of the car will be a right mare.  I cam't even blame the Italian wiring as this is some aftermarket bodge done by some Scottish bloke.  People who wire up cars and do not supply wiring details SHOULD BE KILLED.

Thank you, that is all.
