Shite Rentals

I'm off to Budapest for a long weekend at the end of the month and I'm likely to indulge in a few hours of Trabant rental while I'm there - there's a number of companies such as this (http://www.trabantrent.hu/en/trabant-to-rent) - although that one rents four-stroke Trabants which smacks of decadant capitalist interference so will probably not be suitable.

I'm under no illusions as to what driving in central Budapest is likely to be like, particularly in something as 'unique' as a Trabbie (I've never driven one) but you only live once and it'd be a good way to see a bit more of the surrounding area.

Anyone done this sort of thing before or got any suggestions/recommendations/anecdotes?

Sounds like a great chance to do some eastern block shite spotting! Though they all probably drive round in newish VAG products bought on the never never too these days

The rent a trabbie idea sounds great, looking fwd to hearing about the trip!

The driving in central Budapest is actually pretty civilised. It can get busy (obviously) and I found it quite difficult to navigate around, but if you try to avoid Sector 5 just East of the river then you should be fine.

Parking centrally can also be a bit of a ball-ache. There are many places just outside the very centre however. Behind the Citadel and over near Heroes Square/City Park are good.

The Trabi tour does sound grand, and the city is rather special.

Enjoy.

PS: The whole time I was there, I saw more Ferrari FF's (2) than I did Trabants (1).

Oops, missed this one.  Well that's interesting, I have to wonder if perhaps the Trabant is not a terribly welcome reminder of their communist past and therefore is more of a touristy thing.  Nonetheless, it should be an entertaining few hours.  Parking shouldn't be an issue, I'd probably head out of the city for a look around and then head back in to the start point.  Thanks for the advice about Sector 5 (how Blade Runner does that sound?).

I'm not much of a spotter but I'll do my best!
