But the first night at mine it kept me awake most of the night with the alarm going off even disconecting the battery wouldnt shut it up  , so i decided to remove it but the wiring was in a dangerous  mess so i had to sort that out first

after the wiring was done it was time for a good look at the body and it wasnt good

this is the front floorpan

again with the flash off and the garage door open

unfortunatly this was the good bit

both inner and outer sills and all four floorpan sections and transmission tunnel needed welding

So the owner decided after much sobbing to find another car

an 88 2.8  Xr4X4

So the original got the chop

I quite enjoyed doing the engine and  it was only the price and availability of the parts that took the shine off it

As i said the new car is  a 2.8 mfi

Dash out to remove the the 3 wires that run the 2.8 and to fit the loom and ecu for the 24v

24v in

There was a hold up due to most of the headset being wrong  and a lack of injector O rings meant i couldnt fit the fuel rail and plenum  but at last they arrived so i fitted the fuel rail with /vauxhall injectors not as straight forward as it seemed but after a bit of fuss just popped into place

Notice the earth tag i should have bolted to the back of the head while the engine was out

earth tag done  and Plenum and rad fitted

Brilliant again, that's one smart Sierra now.

As others have said though, those wiring pictures are terrifying.

How much does it cost to supply and fit one like this to a pinto sierra

How much does it cost to supply and fit one like this to a pinto sierra

Trouble is with a pinto engined Sierra everything is wrong   mechanically   parts alone to do it properly would cost about £1500

These engines suffer very badly with timing chain guide wear  as there made of plastic , the chain generaly never breaks but once the guides are worn  the chain can derail or jump a few teeth  then it does get expensive.

Most of these 24v's have short lifes in Sierra's due to the chain to guides and tensioners

They were originaly fitted in automatic Granada's/Scorpio's  and were built as fast cruisers not racers  as the Granada autobox wont let one of these engines rev freely  and by the time the engine is working at an rpm where the 4 valves per cylinder is being an advantage to power the car will be doing serios speed  (   3000rpm  in "Drive"    equals  85-90 mph )

When they are fitted in a Sierra with a manual gearbox all of the sudden they can rev properly  ,but the 22-25 year old cosworth engine thats had an easy life clocking up typicaly 100/150k  offten with poor servicing  will generaly only last weeks typical failure is the long chain guide/slipper  also as it falls to pieces the plastic parts drop down into the sump and get picked up by the oil pick up strainer they dont go past the gauze but will block it so you loose all oil pressure too.

So if your going to fit one of these engines replace the timing tensioners and guides first . look at picture 10 for the plastic looking parts around the timing chain these are some of the guides  these were replaced by a previos owner but for a set of guides expect to pay around £400  for all of them . There not available from Ford anymore only from specialists .

Finding a donor car now is hard  as they are getting scarce so epect to pay around £500 -700 ish for a running an mot failure  unless you are lucky and find a cheap one  , but a lot of people are looking for these engines for all sorts of cars so demand keeps the price up , Beware of non runners or just parts for sale

All the Granada 24v were auto  so the easyist conversion is going to be into a Sierra 2.9 4x4  as the 4x4 sump will bolt straight on with a small modification and the 2.9 flywheel and gearbox will pate up to it  , But any thing else and you will need a v6 rwd gearbox  as its somthing ford never offered over here  they have to be made  by splitting a 4wd box and 2wd box   but expect to pay around £300 for one

Also on a pinto car non of the brakes are big enough either

When done right there a nice conversion but sadly  not a cheap conversion anymore

The most cost effective way forward with a pinto car is  Zetec engine out of  a mk2  Mondeo  a 2.0  set up right with carb will give 150 ish bhp   or even a Focus st170 engine
