I've just read an interesting* article on t'web about new car sales in 2013. Some facts for pub conversations:

 

Dacia sold 17000 cars last year which is the strongest debut performance of any car maker

 

Proton, at their peak, sold around 15000 a year. Last year they sold 20. TBH, I find that quite remarkable seeing as though I know of no Proton products or dealers anymore.

 

MG sales fell to 504 units, despite the fact that overall new car sales grew to highest levels since 2007 and the fact that they introduced a new model. Ferrari sold 694 to put that in perspective.

 

Land Rover outsold Renault (55k vs 46k). Renault's sales are now 4 x smaller than 10 years ago

 

36% of everything sold were superminis

 

Ford still the best seller with 311k sold

 

Hyundai and Kia sold 149k

 

Diesels outsold petrols

 

The marque with the lowest percentage of private buyers was Volvo (surprisingly!) at 32%, followed by Vauxhall at 34%

 

 

 

So forget J reg Protons, 10 years from now a 13 reg Proton will be the shiters holy grail!

Most of the private sales were on preferential finance rates.  So what happens in 3 years when the "balloon" deflates?  I'm guessing there will be a load more second hand cars around that no-one wants or can afford as the cheap credit only applies to new vehicles
