barmatt Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Is there any way of testing if an old motor has had the unleaded conversion done without taking the whole thing apart? Just bought a scimitar and the seller did the hg's last year and said that when he had the engine apart all the valves etc looked like they had been replaced quite recently but he didn't know if they were for unleaded he just used additive anyway. whadya reckon?
Rusty_Rocket Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 No sure way to tell unless you examine the valve seats..Excuse my ignorance, but what engine is in the Scimitar? If it has an alloy head, the seats will probably already have inserts that are most-likely unaffected by the lack of lead.
Rusty_Rocket Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Right yes, you'll need to decapitate it to check the seats to be certain. I would not give it a moments thought and just run unleaded (but that's just me) Junkman 1
Stroller133 Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 Probably just bar room banter, but I thought you could just use unleaded anyway and do 30/40k before the valves burn out in which case you then change them for hardened or if it never fails it doesn't need doing. As I say probably made up BS!
Mr_Bo11ox Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 No thats absolutely right. Just run it on unleaded, it'll be fine. Sigmund Fraud and Junkman 2
