Dropped car battery

While lifting the SD1's battery the handle came off - the bastard thing landed on the car's bonnet, leaving me with more work to do - a nice dent.

Not content with causing damage, it then bounced and landed on my foot - good job I was wearing my toetectors otherwise I would have spent Christmas on the pat and mick.

To top it all, the battery from my vectra is not suitable for the rover - the posts are too far away from the cables.

The casing does'nt appear to have cracked - will it be damaged?

I have topped the cells up with de ionised water and put it on charge - if it is goosed it will have to wait until next year.

It is one of those things that makes you feel like dragging everything out of the garage and flogging it - the rovers bodywork is taking an eternity, filling and sanding, TBH it is starting to feel like a bit of a chore - a sign of losing interest? I did'nt think it would take this long, but I know if I got rid it would be broken up.

By the way, merry christmas.

If it isn't pissing out it will probably be fine. Sling a voltmeter over it and if theres 12.6 ish volts (leave it a couple of hours off charge first) then you haven't shorted out any cells and you'll have gotten away with it.

Merry Christmas Bren. I doubt the battery will be goosed. A lot of them seem to be built to take a knock or two. Don't worry about getting pissed off with the bodywork. Bodywork isn't something thats meant to be enjoyable, it will be tedious at times when your doing the same thing over and over again.

Once you've got it done, I reckon you'll love the car again once its road legal again.

I dropped one once and plastic welded it with a soldering iron and a coat hanger as a filler rod, gave good service for another 4 years after

The battery will be fine I think. I dropped a Mardshall cabinet on my 'schlong' once (don't ask), it was heavily bruised but it was OK.

My Oxford is still confined to  a barn after  pissing me off once too often....Know exactly how you feel, Bren.   I still have not  forgiven my now-departed Mk 1 Mini for a trolley jack-on-big-toe incident that took longer to heal than the car  took to restore.   Some cars are worth it, some aren't but hang in there if you can!

Dropping it will do no harm unless it cracks the case.  In fact, it may do some good by breaking up silt from the bottom.  A chap in the MGOC rejuvinates them by bangin g them on the floor to loosen silt, draining the acid, hosing the out (from a safe distance!) and refilling with new acid.  I have managed to reinvogorate one or two by doing the "banging on the floor" bit before charging up - the best one being a Motorcraft battery that had spent 4 years in a scrap Escort, flat as a pancake, and which went on to work perfectly well n an XJ6!

My pal fixed* a dropped one once with glass mating and resin!

I want a white, square post Motorcraft battery. Anyone got one?

Bren, I feel your pain, mate. I was carrying a Nova SR front seat into the garage once, tripped and it landed subframe-first on a brand new bonnet on my freshly painted car.

No fun, is it?
