One Life Live It - shite 4WD

Here is my auld Subaru Justy mk1 bunched up with lesser 4WD in it's natural habitat, the treacherous terrain of New Brighton beach.

- it has a 1.2 carbed 12v 3 cylinder engine with a balance shaft, affectionately known as the 'thumper' in Australia due to the sound it makes.

It has switchable 4WD (a big recessed, red button on the gearknob), operating a vacuum powered switch on the transfer box, and has LSD on the rear diff. I've only taken it 'off road' twice and it performed amazingly, even through the soft bits of sand, and wouldn't lose traction or spin out no matter how hard I pushed it, even on Michelin road tyres.

I'd love a Daihatsu Fourtrack or Sportrak eventually, or even a Shogun. :)

I brought an engine home for the Nippa, and the coolant spilled out, leaving a 2cm deep puddle in the seating compartment - I had to remove everything, dry it all out, etc. I had a chance to check out the floorpan, and it's all absolutely spotless, apart from a few tiny little areas to worry about on the sills.

Only just remembered I posted this up a couple of months ago, but what the hell:

Great pics! Is that totally rot free? There was one pottering about locally untill recently that was shocking rust wise.

One Life...weld it!

If I ever owned a Series LR, I would have to have that emblazoned across the rear window.

My series was fine bur the Defender, Stage One and Rangie all have a fair bit of 0.6mm mig wire in them.

I thought the 4wd was solenoid operated? iirc looking through the history it was a temperamental part! The old lady who sold that to me said they used to go green laning in Devon, hence the choice (she still had her G-reg 205 1.1 on 150k when money changed hands).

Also no centre diff, I think, be cautious 4wding on tarmac! It doesn't like it at all. I only ever actually used it once; "snow day" at work which turned into make-my-liftshare-crap-himself day  :-D

Glad it's still working so-so, its replacement is utter shit and I want to offload it ASAP.

Yes, I believe it had a solenoid and diaphragm and sleeve 'thingy'. LAter ones had a hydraulic stem selector 'doofer'. It had less moving parts, but did the same thing.

Yes, I saw that bit on the sill, excellently* fibre glassed up.

I'm going to get a sticker made up to put in the Justy window. :)

I loved my Justy.  Even on borderline rear tyres it was brilliant in the snow (and GR9 4 DRIFTIN in 4wd) - I imagine a Justy on a decent set of snow tyres would be pretty much invincible.

Effin ace.

A bloke on my course at (agricultural) college had one - an enthusiastically driven Justy is a (very) poor man's Quattro on damp and muddy back roads, and the equal of a shagged 109 Landy on half-bald crossplies in the goo. They are brilliant on wet grass too.
