John F Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Thought I might as well do a separate thread for this as there may be some people interested in these that aren't going to Shitefest... One of the fellas that goes to my local pub has got the worldwide distribution rights (except USA & Canada) for a newly-launched type of open-ended ratchet spanners... They're available in metric & imperial (pic shows imperial, natch!). Quality is right up there with Snap-On, and the idea is quite neat - especially when reaching down the back of a car engine to shift some bastard bolt or other, where you can get a fraction of a turn on a standard spanner before turning it over and getting another fraction of a turn, then repeat until pissed off, etc. We offered to display some for him at our target sports event at the recent Baildon Harley Davidson rally since he was away at a kit car show that weekend, and he's happy for me to bring some along to Shitefest too if there's enough interest. RRP for a set of 10 (metric) is a hefty £99, but he says he can do a Shitefest price of £90 (I can probably get the same discount for people that can't make it to Shitefest). They're also available as a 3-piece set or individually, see his website for details: http://www.chicagobrand.co.uk/ Let me know if you're interested in smaller sets or individual spanners & I'll get a price for them.
explosive-cabbage Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 10mm one please! How much? *birthday present to myself*
John F Posted September 2, 2013 Author Posted September 2, 2013 I've dropped Phil a text, Will... will let you know when he gets back to me BTW happy birthday!
John F Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 Phil says he can do the 10mm spanner for £13.50, Will... basically it seems to be 10% discount across the board. Shall I bring one to Shitefest for you then?
Junkman Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 I do have an issue with them though. The idea as such is fuggin brilliant. However, I don't quite trust the moving bit that forms one end of the spanner mouth. Are there any test results of durability tests?
John F Posted September 5, 2013 Author Posted September 5, 2013 Don't know of any durability tests, but the manufacturers are offering lifetime warranty so I suppose they must be confident in the spanners' durability. I'll ask Phil if he's got any test details though.
John F Posted September 9, 2013 Author Posted September 9, 2013 OK, I've received a copy of the specification for the spanners... unfortunately it's in .pdf format and I R TOO THIKC to work out how to upload it on here. I'll ask Dave. But in the meantime I'll just copy out the recommended torques (in Nm) for some common metric sizes. 10 mm: 2412 mm: 4213 mm: 5214 mm: 6415 mm: 7717 mm: 107 The spanners are also made from 17-4Ph stainless steel, if that means anything to you. Will: I'm picking up your 10 mm on Weds
explosive-cabbage Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Hurrah can you wrap it in birthday paper too?? Please??Newspaper is good enough for me, I use it to wrap presents
Station Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I've always wondered how to make open ended ratchet spanners, this is not far off genius if they work well.I'd happily take an 8mm, 10mm, 12mm (for those crazy Jap motors) and 14mm if they come in singles?

Are you going to be at Shitefest? If so, you can have a play with them & see how they work. Otherwise I'm sure we can sort something out, They do come in singles but the smallest available size is 10 mm... probably the most cost-effective way to do it is a 3-piece metric set: http://www.chicagobrand.co.uk/3-piece-metric-set/ I can probably get you that for £40... drop me a PM (or turn up at Shitefest) to arrange things.
Mr Livered Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Hurrah can you wrap it in birthday paper too?? Please??Newspaper is good enough for me, I use it to wrap presents Tin foil is best for presents because it wraps around the present with no need for tape. Bobthebeard 1
John F Posted September 10, 2013 Author Posted September 10, 2013 Might as well have another go at uploading the spec sheet...Geometric dimensions.pdf
John F Posted September 10, 2013 Author Posted September 10, 2013 Woohoo! Success. Seems you have to create a post, then edit it using the full editor - then there's an option to attach files.
