tooSavvy Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 Long ago, en route to hotel on opposite side of island from airport, we came to a roundabout >> next to which was a HUGE breakers yard, full of what people drove before joining the Euro...lol Today (well... 4 weeks ago) this is what resides at Port Colom, tourist boat trip destination of yore..... OLD CHODNEW CHOD ... not much rust... ... not much straight panels... ... is this estate benefitting from a Euro Stlyee facelift?? Dunno! Werthers, this one..... if I could have found a big enough cardboard box I'd bin away with it!!Totally Unmarked..... in/out!! Quote... "Think I'll wait 5 years and buy me one of these for four and sixpence ha'penny." I didn't see any serious old tin, parked up a back lane or languishing in some field - half full of Olives.... tooSavvy Â
CortinaDave Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I visited Majorca a few years back and was disappointed by the almost total lack of tat. I did see one mk5 cortina ghia- but otherwise it was all moderns. Not a patch on the Greek isles!
Split_Pin Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 All the proper 70s chod disappeared overnight. When I visited Menorca in '93 and Majorca in '94, old Eurpoean cars right from the early 70s were omnipresent. Then when I went back to the latter island in 1996 I only spotted one Chrysler Alpine in the whole 2 weeks.
freebird Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I think the lack of old shit out there is due to, in no small part, their MOT test. When i lived out there in 2004 I had to take my car in for its MOT and it was quite an experience. The car was bounced about, jiggled and generally pulled about until it either fell to pieces or survived. It survived and got a ticket. Its fair to say that, due to the appalling standards of driving there and lack of maintenance more and more old chod wouldnt have passed that MOT in a million years. There are "Historic" registered cars out there but its nothing like the movement we have here.
CortinaDave Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 Shame - climate wise its ideal for chod. I believe the Greeks have fairly recently introduced EU MoT standards which seems to already have killed off a lot of the tat. Shame! At least we still have Malta...
