The way i understand it, a vehicle needs to be insured at all times UNLESS its on SORN and thus not in use. so yes. if hes going to break it anyway  I would sorn it and refund the tax.

Right

BUT he won,t be able to refund the tax i think as he didn,t buy it,is that correct??

I remember a Safrane i bought with 11 months tax but i couldn,t get a penny because i didn,t buy it.

Never heard of not getting a VED refund because somebody else paid for it initially before, have cashed in a tax disc that came with the car several times though I always waited until the V5 came back in my name before sending it off.

The only time I didn't get a refund was when the previous owner 'paid' for the disc with a bouncing cheque!

Got a rather snotty letter from DVLA saying they didn't give refunds on discs that weren't paid for.

you need to be the regd keeper to get the tax back. If you SORN it with the tax on it the tax gets cancelled.

The regd keeper of the car can cash the tax in, doesnt matter who bought the tax in the first place!!!!

True, they don't keep a record of who actually pays. They'll just send a cheque made out to the registered keeper, and only send it to the registered keeper's address. So update the V5, cash it in, SORN it.

No. If you're driving it it's a road traffic act jobbie so it's a fine of up to £200 and 6 spangly new gold stars for your licence.

If you just own it, and it's stashed somewhere, it's only the DVLA who care so it's a snotty letter followed by a £100 fine if you fail to leap into action

Just to update on this, the reason he is not insuring it is because its going to be broken up,but he wants to display a valid tax disc because he has some nosey tossers near him including a copper who will proberly report it for not displaying a valid tax disc,it is being kept of the road in the small carpark.

So he paid to keep the tax,so should he just SORN it and live with the loss of 3 months tax but be legal insurance wise and display the tax disc?

If he claims the tax back(when he gets the V5)he won,t have a disc on display, but if he doesn,t SORN it he will get done for an uninsured vehicle!

Careful. Car parks often come under 'Road' when it comes to tax - to kill a loophole where twats in Saxos could hide from coppers on Maccy D's car parks and be all like "base - can't touch me."

If you're in a place where you need tax you need insurance too, and the rozzers will check if they are in the habit of checking discs there. That would be a 6 point offence.

is there somebody you know well enough with a trade policy? They can add it to the policy and the MID so its on ANPR when parked. YOU/YOUR MATE WILL NOT BE INSURED TO DRIVE IT. BUT it will show up as insured. BTW if the V5 is still in the last keepers name, why worry? Unless its somebody you like who you dont want to bother....

I sorned a car and kept the tax disc in the window a few months. Without tax disc landlord would remove car, no one cares about it being insured or not, although technically it should have insurance to be parked where it is, in my case.

the disc is cancelled though, once the SORN takes effect. Obviously you needed the physical disc but on the road its worthless.
