Every so often the oil level warning light would illuminate on my vectra C - anybody who owns a modern vauxhall gets used to having various idiot lights illuminated.

It did'nt concern me because the engine oil level is regularly checked - I assumed that it would need a new sensor at some point.

However, I did notice that for some reason the light would illuminate at the same place more or less - where the M62 meets the M6 past Burtonwood, close to the area in between the motorways where the farm is located (where the 80's TV series truckers was filmed).

I spotted a mobile phone mast when the light came on the other day, I had wondered if that had anything to do with it. Going to work this morning, I thought I would see if the light illuminated. As I approached the mast and passed under some HT wires which cross the motorway (and are quite low) the light came on!

It goes to show the strength of EM fields around these things, I remember watching somebody stand under powerlines with a flourescent tube and it illuminated itself - I have heard of central locking being affected by these things but never engine sensors.

How many people have possibly had duff sensors replaced because of exposure to EM fields?

Haven't you heard that evil mobile phone masts ACTUALLY suck oil out of your engine?

I worked as a base site engineer for Cellnet in 1999. One of my mates was working at a big CAA mast up the Gleniffer braes near paisley and he had phoned me to say that he couldn't get his company disco to start. So I headed over to see him while he waited for the AA to arrive. As soon as I rolled into the compound, my Disco cut out and wouldn't restart. Eventually we rolled it 200 yards down the hill where it started no bother. When the AA boy arrived to fix my mate, his truck cut out as well! Never got to the bottom of it, but the AA boy reckoned that the immobilisers were being activated by whatever the CAA were using to transmit.
