Smoky camper question

Hi, planning a two week trip at the start of june in the old master, gonna be headed through the lake district - wales - cornwall - dover - and wherever takes my fancy on the east coast. Service is booked for next saturday but noticed she is putting out a bit of black smoke. Not too much, just when revved hard / going uphill. its done a fair few miles mind, 164,000 when the speedo / odometer conked out and loads since! anyone used engine stop leak sealer lube? and does it actually work as intended? im guessing i have worn valve seals or something to that effect. cheers :)

Erm, what camper is the camper?

My only experience of worn valve seals was that it would kick out smoke on lifting off, and it was more white. Under acceleration it was fine (on a Scirocco 1.8i).

Isn't black smoke more a fuelling issue, whilst white smoke is oil related?

Black is usually unburnt fuel rather than oil which tends to be white/blue-ish.

Its a 1998 Renault Master t35d, it blows the black stuff while revved at a stop, goin up^ and low gears i guess. i never notice it when im doin 60 (ish, no speedo) on the motorway.

Pretty much all older DERV blow a puff of black on initial acceleration - quite normal.

Also under heavy load.

It suggests overfuelling caused by poor airflow. Is the air filter clogged? When you rev it, are all the hoses intact, and not squidging up? I trust you have the SOFIM 2445/2500CC unit in there? Normally a good robust (if very heavy) engine, with few real failures caused by poor manufacture etc.

Air filter seems fine to me, i replaced it about 8 months ago as i found a spare under the bed ;) amongst other things, And yea thats the engine (i had to google it) :)

ill see how she goes after the service, gonna get the garage to do the oil sump gasket this time too co's of the black spots that follow me around...
