Talk to me about Mazda MX3's

There is a r reg one for sale at the end of our street. Now i have lived here for 10years and i think he has had it all that time

A quick look as i passed there looked a little crud around the rear wheel arch, apart from that it looks clean. When i get a chance i may go and talk to him.

Depends if it's a 1.6 four-pot or a 1.8 V6. Neither are particularly quick but the bent-six makes a lovely noise and revs to the moon and back. Is 133 bhp enough for you?

They're in that weird purgatory zone value wise between 'pocket money' and 'buttons'. There are some nicely kept ones still around but many of the owners seem to suffer from the same affliction as Ford Probe fanciers - too many stickers, crap bodykits and 'chrome' alloys.

An interesting little curio, but I wouldn't give more than £400 for one, even if it were mint. You should at least be able to get it on classic insurance for much cheapness.

You see the occasional Eunos \ Autozam AZ-3 knocking around too - these are the parallel import 'greys' that came in around the same time as the MX-3 went on sale. Lots of vile specifications, autoboxes and 1.5 litre fours from the 323. These are pretty much frag feed.

I believe the V6 has quite an involved cambelt route, does it go around the sunvisor and rear bumper bracket?

They're due at 60k or some age, factor in the cost if it hasn't been done recently

I'd eat one of these if it was the V6, although I have a feeling i'd be a bit underwhelmed when I drove it. One to put away for the future I reckon

I had a 1.8 V6. It made a rather poor first impression by overheating on the M20 on the way back from picking it up, but it was a fun little thing to drive - not massively quick in a straight line but handled like a go-kart, and did an amusing line in lift-off oversteer in the wet. I'd have another, but as others have said it would need to be cheap.

Not bad looking little things.

The back seats are ok for your fanny pack, anything more - forget it. And the 1.8 v6 can be surprisingly partial to pez.
