How Do You Fix a Steering Lock?

Potentially stupid question, but from what I understand under new MOT regulations the steering lock must be operational, and since the Corolla was broken into it no longer has one. Is the lock actually part of the column or ignition barrel? There's one breaking on ebay right now, and although the MOT doesn't run out until August it might be a good time to get the bits I need. Cheers.

Usually the lock and barrel bolt on to the steering column using shear bolts. You need a hammer and a punch to undo them.

steering lock thing only applies to vehicles first used on or after 1 September 2001, as far as I understood it. Also if its no longer there how can they fail it! My 1986 Saab 900 has no steering lock from the factory, neither did the Bentely TurboR I took for the mot during the week.

According to this it's only on vehicles first used after 1 September 2001, but that is dated 1 January 2012 and the rules changes on 30 March this year.

I asked my friendly MOT place and even they weren't sure. For reference, this is what it currently looks like. You can see where the metal shroud has been broken

You don't need it. Don't worry. The change was made Jan 2012, but only implemented fully this year.

Ok thanks, one less thing to worry about. Am thinking of selling it soon, but will probably need a fresh ticket to attract any interest
