Anybody want a Golf?

Hi All,

I have a Golf Cabriolet that has been sat in a garage unused for around 18 months through no fault of its own other than my own laziness / incompetence. It's a 1.8 Carb Clipper (but the small bumper one from 1987), so requires the more expensive flavour of tax. I bought it in 2009 wanting a bit of fun in the sun

It ran really well when parked - had not long had a top end rebuild, new cam belt, new fuel pump, new fuel return thingy, new Weber Carb (manual choke), new exhaust and loads of other bits and bobs. In the last year it was driven, it managed trips to France and Cornwall with no effort.

I still have the Pierberg carb with auto choke - some people think they're better, if you get them working correctly.

It's 'bronze-grey' (browney beige) metallic and is solid (there's a blister hidden beneath the back bumper and bubbling on drivers door). Albeit I haven't looked at it properly in a little while. It had new Hella headlamps and currently sports some dashing Pirelli P Slot wheels off a MK2 Golf I think? I also have some scraggy wheels that look a bit like BBS wheels and are missing centrecaps (but these have ancient tyres).

It had the interior retrimmed in beige vinyl because the seats were knackered and torn, which was a bit of shame. Unfortunately the cables snapped for pulling the seat forwards to access the back seats, I have these cables, but haven't installed. Also the plastic seat runner guides are broken, but you can get these for a few quid. It's had new carpets, new sound insulation, new boot carpet and a cheapo stereo which is rubbish, but makes a noise and you can plug in an AUX lead.

It had new Pirelli tyres on it in 2010, hasn't had many miles at all put on them, but one keeps slowly loosing air, so I'm concerned that there could be damage to that tyre if it's gone completely flat since I last saw it.

It came off the road to have a new roof fitted, the old roof was removed, all fittings are in the car (messily) and the new roof draped over the top. I then realised I lacked the skill to do it. New side and rear cables as well as a foam gasket kit are also included. I've been quoted by someone to put the roof on will cost about £250, but it needs to be located somewhere with electric and I have no way of moving it.

There is a minor oil leak from the sump, there is a new gasket provided with the car for this, but again, I was too lazy.

I've figured the cost of getting it back on the road will probably be about the same as what it's worth, and it's currently costing money in garage rent that I'm being nagged about on a very regular basis. I date an accountant  .

A lack of time between working full time, moving house and doing my degree has meant it's done nothing but languish in my rented garage near where I used to live in Warwick. Anyway, the crux of this is, I need it gone. I don't want to see it broken for parts, because it's been too good a car for that.

Below are some pictures of it in happier times.

It's very practical too!

I'm aware that this isn't the most desirable of cars, and it's probably only financially worth it if you have the time to do stuff yourself. It will need trailering away, I'll charge the battery over the weekend and see if it starts ok and get current pictures if required of any bits of the car you want.

All this makes me seem like a horrid person, but I did really like this car, but lost interest and now I'm not sure I can find the time to do it.

I was thinking of putting it on eBay for a 99p start and letting it go for whatever it goes for. But to avoid entering the murky world of eBay, I was wondering if anyone wants to make an offer? I'm really not after a lot.

Oh it's called Greta. I'm a loser and I name my cars.

Cheers

James

Nice car and colour. Roof replacement does seem a job worth farming out though! Just had a quick look into it. Realised I don't own 98% of the tools required. Or patience.

There was a guide on the Mk1 Golf owners club website that made it seem so simple! It wasn't.

I've since been mocked accordingly by many for attempting it on my own on the street. Annoying thing is, I do need a car to use as a daily since my company car got repossessed, and the Golf would fit the bill, but my lack of time, and ability to transport it is causing issues.
