Justin Case Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 My first few spottings from the heart of rural England. Apologies for the quality of the pictures (the light was working against me), but I hope the subject matter makes up for it: Nice Polo coupe[/img] Pinkish AX Too new perhaps, but 06 reg and £3495 Tata Safari Pick of the bunch? Immaculate Fiat Tempra 2.0 ie SW Took the Alfa in for a service today; was quite pleased when I saw the courtesy car (I thought) This is what they gave me Non-turbo diesel and so basic it didn't have any letters for the model:
Milford Cubicle Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I recently bought a 1.9D boggo Golf, it isn't that bad actually. Apart from its lack of central locking, which is a bit annoying - especially as two of the locks don't work.
r.welfare Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Hey chaps, are those 1.9D Golfs really as slow as I assume them to be (64bhp or summat)? Is that the rest of the fleet gone now then Milford?
Milford Cubicle Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Yes, I'm down to just the grim Golf now. It's not quite boggo as it's a "Match" "special edition", which means some garish '90s special edition-grade stickers and some rubbish alloys wheels to distinguish it from the '1.9D L'Mr. Golf is not too miserable to drive at all for its 64bhp, feels much perkier from low speeds than the turbo-diesels I've driven and gets up to cruising speed without much fuss.
r.welfare Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 A friend of mine has one; it too has garish alloys and the wheelarch kit from the GTI, for some reason. He reckons it is pretty perky - mind you, his only other automotive point of reference is an automatic Porsche 924
Richard Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Hey chaps, are those 1.9D Golfs really as slow as I assume them to be (64bhp or summat)?I've never driven a Golf Diesel but I used to have a Renault Savanna with a 65BHP 1.9 non-turbo diesel engine. It was surprisingly sprightly and not noticeably slower than our R19 with the same engine.
Justin Case Posted August 3, 2008 Author Posted August 3, 2008 Last Friday was the first time I'd driven a diesel Golf of any sort, so I can't really say how it compares to a turbo model. Winding country roads with frequent short steep hills saw it slowing down quite a bit, but there was plenty of low-down torque to get you there eventually. I think that you need a certain driving style to get the best out of it, but you will need more than 40 miles to get it to a fine art. On the other hand the build quality still showed through; the seats were as good as new, and there were no creaks or rattles going over pot-holes or cattle grids.
