Big Genny

I bought a large Wolfe 4 stroke genny a while back. It has been fab and bloody useful. However, of late it has been running a little off and today it cut out on me. I put more petrol in, checked the oil and cleaned the plug which was a little sooty. It stated beautifully but again cut out after a minute or so. Now it will start but idles roughly and cuts out after a few seconds.

I simply cannot afford another genny, so I wondered if anyone had any thoughts about what might be amiss. I rely heavily on the genny and will be stuffed if it is terminal.

Cheers

Sounds like air filter blocked, or maybe oil soaked, choke sticking on? Could even be crap in the carb, portable stuff can be a bit prone to dirt in fuel, being filled from cans and all.

I'd point to the carb too - if it's one of these carbs that uses the intake pulse on a diaphragm to pump the fuel into the floatbowl, then they run poorly when the diaphragm breaks down as fuel gushes through the hole, causing a hugely rich mixture.
